Hiring Conditions: Job Title & Pay Range Are Dependent Upon Licensure

1. Job Title: Parks & Cemetery Equipment Operator

Licenses Required: MA Class B CDL, MA Hoisting License 2B

Hourly Pay Range With All Required Licenses: $25.49 - $31.02

Initial Union Hiring Rate : $25.49

2. Job Title: Parks & Cemetery Laborer

Minimal License: MA Class D Driver’s License.

Hourly Pay Range Without All Required Licenses: $23.19 - $28.11

Initial Union Hiring Rate : $23.19

Summary

The Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government driven by high performance and creativity, seeks a skilled and motivated team member to join our Parks & Cemetery Maintenance Division within the Department of Public Works! Under the general supervision of the Parks & Cemetery Supervisor, you’ll perform a variety of essential tasks to maintain the beauty and safety of our parks and cemetery properties. From landscaping to snow plowing, and equipment operation to emergency responses, this role is a dynamic blend of hands-on work, problem-solving, and pride in your community. Whether you're mowing athletic fields, maintaining irrigation systems, or assisting residents, your work will directly impact the enjoyment and safety of the public.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate a range of equipment: front-end loader, backhoe, dump truck, wood chipper, tractors, mowers, and more.

• Maintain athletic fields, including mowing, fertilizing, trimming, lining, and painting.

• General cleaning / maintaining parks and the cemetery

• Mark foundation locations for headstones and veterans’ markers.

• Maintain playgrounds and equipment for safety.

• Inspect and repair irrigation systems, including water lines and storm drains.

• Remove trash, clean restrooms, and keep parks and cemetery grounds pristine.

• Work with contractors to ensure the success of public works projects.

• Respond to snow emergencies, after-hours public works needs, and community-wide emergencies, and may be called to assist in other DPW departments if needed

• Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, ensuring they’re always ready for action.

• Assist residents with inquiries and concerns related to roadway and public property issues.

  
  

Skills & Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent with relevant experience.

• Class B Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License and Massachusetts 2B Hoisting Engineer’s License.

• Knowledge of landscaping methods, equipment operation, and state/local laws regarding safety and property maintenance.

• Strong communication skills and a customer-friendly attitude.

• Ability to handle emergency situations and be on-call as needed.

Work Hours & Benefits

The hours are conveniently 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as required. A daily 30-minute lunch as agreed upon by the Parks & Cemetery Supervisor.
