Principal Engineer

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this position is responsible for promoting company growth through the design, development, and introduction of new products to the market by developing the engineering concepts to support the new product design, along with providing the project management necessary to develop the new product prototype into a viable product. Provide technical leadership in the area of expertise, with the ability to train others and represent the company externally. Act in the capacity of the Company’s ultimate technical authority in the area of expertise.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct a feasibility study that determines if a new product effort is technically feasible within acceptable time and money constraints.
• Manage both minor and major projects within the ISO 9001 System through memos, charts, graphs, etc. to keep management informed of progress.
• Prepare a detailed project plan that schedules all project-related activities for each department through project completion.
• Design and develop new products and redesign or modify existing products.
• Redesign current products to correct deficiencies or to improve quality and/or to assist in reducing costs.
• Review projects received, analyze, and interpret specifications, and develop basic design features required to meet the technical performances specified.
• Create design sketches, finished drawings, and schematics.
• Specify methods and procedures for Manufacturing and Quality Control.
• Devise and specify test methods.
• Create bills of material for the product and components.
• Develop routings for product assembly and sub-assemblies.
• Follow projects through development and test stages, including test programs as required, and analyze test results to determine the accuracy of test procedures or product design.
• Build prototypes.
• Release product to the field, assisting with technical literature, support, and travel as necessary.
• Direct, instruct, assist, and check the work of other personnel assigned to the project as to design, testing, or other related activities.
• Contact suppliers concerning questions of performance and availability of parts, evaluate quotations, capability, and assist in the make-or-buy selection.
• Work with customers or new product or application problems.
• Visit field representatives and customers to provide design technology or to diagnose and correct problems and failures.
• Compile data and compose test reports for customer use.
• Prepare periodic or special reports as required by management.
• Provide a written patent disclosure and background information to the patent attorney when applying for a new product patent, and follow through in all details until the patent is issued or denied.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Act as an in-house consultant for all technical areas of expertise relating to any company products or components.
• Keep abreast of technological and usage developments in product areas of interest to the Company.
• Provide technical advice and support to other departments, sales representatives, and customers either verbally or in writing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• To be eligible for this position, candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
• Seven (7) to ten (10) years of design and development engineering experience in a related manufacturing business.
