Senior energy management specialist

Team: Energy Division - Sustainability and Environmental Resources Team Reports to : Sustainability and Environmental Resources Manager Position Overview: Boston Public Schools (BPS) seeks an experienced Energy, Utilities, and Building Systems professional to assist with the implementation and maintenance of the BPS Energy Management program, and advise BPS on energy and utilities best practices within BPS buildings. The Senior Energy Specialist position resides in the Facilities Management Department within the Operations Division of Boston Public Schools, and is part of the BPS Energy Division reporting to the Sustainability and Environmental Resources Manager. The BPS Energy Division utilizes Building Management Systems to monitor and manage all BPS building utilities, and to find efficiency and conservation opportunities, while balancing occupancy comfort levels. The BPS Energy Division projects, monitors, and analyzes utility usages and costs, and reports this information on a monthly and annual schedule to BPS leadership. The Senior Energy Specialist will serve in a Midlevel role within Facilities Management. Responsibilities:- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the Boston Public Schools Energy Management Program.
- Advise Facilities Management on energy and utilities best practices within BPS buildings.
- Within 12 months of hiring, shall obtain Building Operator Certification (BOC)
- Shall conduct inspections of the Energy Management System (EMS).
- Shall assist in the maintenance of the Building Management System.
- Works with administrators, Shared Savings Contractors and building custodians to ensure proper scheduling of energy management systems.
- Monitors the performance of all mechanical systems including, but not limited to, boilers, chillers, pumps, and air handlers , co-generators, compressors, and solar panels.
- Analyze the performance of the mechanical systems to spot problems or trends that may affect energy usage.
- Fine tunes control programs for optimum performance and savings including optimum start routines, duty cycles, and hot water reset schedules.
- Monitor EMS systems alarms, and notifies proper and responsible personnel and dispatches the appropriate service personnel to respond.
- Coordinate alarm monitoring with municipal protective services to maintain critical alarm coverage at all times.
- Analyzes costs for utilities building by building, and recommends consumption goals and reports out-of-range fluctuations to the Energy Division Chief.
- Shall assist in the management and development of energy and water efficiency and conservation measures.
- Shall be able to communicate energy, utility, and building systems information to all levels of BPS staff, students, and community.
- Shall solicit estimates from vendors following all public procurement laws. Shall schedule and review work of vendors to ensure the orderly completion of work; may approve and sign invoices.
- Shall assist with the management of the Energy Division budget.
- This position is an on-call position and may require occasional night and weekend work as deemed necessary.
- Vocational degree in energy management or a related field
- 2-3 years of professional experience in energy management and related equipment. This may be substituted for a BA or MA in energy and utility management, and building systems; the physical and natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and environmental) and computer science and programming.
- Experience dealing with energy, utilities, and water and sewer.
- Experience with budgeting.
- Experience communicating energy issues.
- Experience with implementing small and large energy efficiency projects and initiatives, coordinating with contractors, and reporting on project results.
- Ability to develop custom reports and create new analytic tools.
- Ability to learn new systems and technologies.
- Ability to communicate complex energy related concepts to diverse audiences.
- Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
- Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite; Google Drive Suite, and electronic communication tools, like email and text.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and have daily availability of an automobile for travel to assigned schools.
- Current authorization to work in the United States.
- An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
- A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.
- BA or MA in energy and utility management, and building systems; the physical and natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and environmental) and computer science and programming.
- 3-5 years of professional experience in energy management
- Experience in a public school system, and/or familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools.
- Bilingual or multilingual (with speaking, reading and writing abilities in one of the major non-English languages spoken in Boston): bonus
- Any of the following Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
