Laboratory Manager

Salary Range: $71,313.30 - $96,273.72

The City of Attleboro seeks a Laboratory Manager for the Wastewater Department who, under the general supervision of the Wastewater Superintendent, monitors, tests and interprets the chemical and bacteriological aspect of wastewater treatment operations.

Duties include Performs laboratory tests of plant influent and effluent. Reviews tests performed by staff. Prepares reports to regulatory agencies on test results and plant conditions. Monitors groundwater downgradient of treatment plant in compliance with state regulation. Confers with other city departments and state and federal agencies and the general public relative to departmental issues. Plans, directs and supervises the work of laboratory technicians. Maintains inventories of necessary supplies; requisitions supplies. Monitors pH levels at various locations: performs process control test such as 60-minute settleability, 60-minute settleometer, centrifuge tests of mixed liquor and returned sludge; and total suspended solids. Performs nutrient analyses and bacteriological examination for total phosphorous, anomia nitrogen, BOD and fecal coliform. Making up and sterilizing bacteria supplies. Making up standard for metals analysis and saving samples and preserving them for analysis. Inspects and maintains the plants’ self-contained breathing apparatus. Performs related work as required.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or natural sciences; at least two years’ experience in wastewater treatment, with at least one year in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Driver’s License required. Grade 4 Wastewater License required or ability to obtain within one year of hire. Requires knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety. Ability to operate basic laboratory equipment and instruments. Requires basic knowledge of math fundamentals and good organizational, management, and supervisory skills.
