Director, IT Engineering

Whoop
Boston, MA

Job Description

Job Description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

WHOOP is looking for a deeply technical individual to lead our IT function. We’re calling this position Director of IT Engineering to emphasize the criticality of having a strong, technical IT organization. This leadership role is for a builder who likes to lead by example and is great at both strategy and hands-on execution. Good fit candidates will be able to speak to countless examples of using bleeding edge, powerful tools & technologies to drive frictionless employee experience, major improvements in productivity and efficiency, and security-by-design.

Our IT team is very small today. You will join at the ground level and build the team. Together with that team, you will design, implement, and operate an IT environment that will enable our employees through the next phases of scale and global expansion. You will toil over making our employee experience the best it can be. You will build innovative and reliable corporate infrastructure with AI. And you will protect our company, brand, and employees from security threats.

This role reports to our VP of Business Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Engineer a fast, frictionless workplace: Lead global IT operations that enable thousands of people around the world to do their best work and get things done faster than at other employers.
  • Craft an innovative technology environment: Imagine what IT should look like in 5 years and make it real for WHOOP.
  • Scale with human and non-human workers: Technology today can do more than just deflect HelpDesk tickets. Figure out how to run hyper efficient IT operations.
  • Implement robust and thoughtful security protections: You’re responsible for security-by-design that actually protects the company.
  • Continuously earn the trust of WHOOP members: Compliance and controls need to be embedded in everything you do to serve and honor our members.
  • Drive cross-functional change: Be a visible, respected leader who senior leaders want to listen to and solve problems with. Be an exceptional collaborator who drives meaningful improvements in our business operations.
  • Build the most technically capable IT team in the Northeast: Shape a team that excels in driving employee experience, productivity & efficiency, and security - all at a fast pace.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Be a master of modern technology with deep hands-on experience implementing innovative systems.
  • Extensive leadership experience across IT or Engineering in high-growth environments.
  • Pragmatic judgment around architecture and system design with the ability to balance speed, scalability, security, and employee experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to tackle a broad range of business challenges, moving seamlessly from high-level strategy to direct system engineering and delivery.
  • Outstanding business partnership skills, capable of excellent storytelling, problem solving, and transparent communications.
  • Experience building and leading high-performing technical teams and setting a high bar for quality and reliability.
  • High EQ and deep care for employee experience. Adept at finding creative solutions that balance business needs with removing friction for employees.
  • Think and act like a CFO: highly skilled at financial analysis; strong business acumen; high integrity stewardship of the company’s finances.

Interested in the role but don’t meet every qualification? We encourage you to apply! At WHOOP, we value potential, character, and curiosity as much as experience.

WHOOP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-Verify to determine employment eligibility. It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.

At WHOOP, we view total compensation as the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the long-term success of the company and allows every member of our corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company’s long-term growth and success.

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $200,000 - $245,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package. These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs.

While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
