Job Description
The Machinist will operate a variety of machine tools to manufacture, repair, and restore mechanical equipment. This position requires precision, strong technical knowledge, and adherence to safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Record all required data to produce expected service and/or design results, including measurements and illustrations
- Use precision measuring instruments and techniques to ensure accurate sizing
- Perform milling operations including drilling, tapping, boring, conventional milling, and lathe work
- Operate engine lathes, horizontal and vertical mills, and horizontal boring mills
- Balance mechanical assemblies using dynamic balancing equipment
- Perform metalizing (metal spraying) techniques as required
- Select and understand materials appropriate to specific applications
- Perform welding operations including MIG, TIG, torch, and stick welding
- Set up and perform tool-post grinding operations (e.g., precision surface facing) and broaching procedures
- Use hand-held and stationary power tools and non-power tools including band saws, belt sanders, grinders, and files
- Lift, tighten, adjust, and secure heavy objects while following proper safety practices
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), especially eye and ear protection
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Assist other machinists with skilled and non-skilled duties as directed
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or service center manager
Qualifications
- High school diploma required
- Additional training through trade school, vocational/technical school, military training, machine shop apprenticeship, or equivalent on-the-job experience preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications preferred
- Commitment to workplace safety
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Special Skills
Basic mechanical aptitude
Ability to understand, perform, and retain skill-related training, as well as operational and safety procedures as demonstrated by a supervisor
Completion of a five-year, hands-on apprenticeship program is a plus
Physical Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet the following physical demands:
Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; communicate effectively (talk and hear)
Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms
Occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
Possess adequate vision, including:
Clear vision at 20+ feet (with or without corrective lenses)
Close vision and distance vision
Peripheral vision
Depth perception
Ability to adjust focus
