Head of Power System Studies, Powertech USA

Powertech is offering an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Head of Power System Studies to develop, lead, and expand our US-based consulting team. Renowned globally for its expertise, Powertech’s power system study team delivers a comprehensive range of technical consulting services. These include RMS and EMT modeling, interconnection studies, compliance evaluations, NERC MOD model validation, transmission system planning and operational studies, grounding and induction analyses, failure investigations, and system event reviews. Additionally, the study team supports the software team in constantly improving Powertech’s flagship software package, DSATools™, to address new technical challenges as they emerge. The US-based team will benefit from full support from the parent company and leverage the strong market presence of DSATools™ to achieve success. Reporting to the CEO of Powertech USA and the Director of Engineering Services at Powertech Labs, the successful candidate will establish and lead the US System Studies team, driving Powertech’s growth and presence in the US market. Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Build, lead, and develop a highly skilled and efficient technical team, fostering collaboration and excellence.
- Sales & Business Development: Take ownership of sales initiatives by working with existing customers for new projects and prospecting new customers, qualifying leads, and developing strategic approaches to win business. Prepare compelling proposals, deliver persuasive presentations, and negotiate contracts to achieve revenue targets. Focus on building a strong sales pipeline and driving long-term growth through proactive relationship management and deal closing.
- Customer Engagement & Account Management: Actively manage and grow relationships with U.S. customers to drive revenue. Promote services by identifying customer needs, providing tailored solutions, and ensuring consistent follow-up to close sales and secure repeat business. Leverage feedback to refine offerings and maintain a competitive edge.
- Operational and Financial Management: Oversee the technical, financial, and operational performance of the team to ensure consistent delivery of results.
- Workload Oversight: Manage daily workloads and staff utilization rates to ensure efficiency and productivity.
- Strategic Growth: Assess market trends, develop strategies for growth, engage clients, and enhance service offerings to maintain a competitive edge.
- Mentorship: Provide technical coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to junior staff, empowering them to grow into technical experts.
- Industry Leadership: Represent the organization as an industry expert, promoting global leadership in power system consulting and advanced analysis tools.
- Proposal and Contract Management: Prepare proposals and lead contract negotiations to secure new projects.
- Project Delivery: Manage and support a team of engineers in delivering projects of varying complexity and risk levels.
- Technical Training: Deliver specialized training courses to clients, enhancing their understanding of power system studies.
- Team Building: Oversee recruitment, staff training, and career development, while recommending promotions based on performance.
- Resource Allocation: Provide input on budgeting, work planning, and resource allocation to support strategic goals.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with corporate functions, including Finance, Human Resources, Legal, and HSEQ, to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
- Education: A bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience: Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in power system modeling and studies. Expertise in generator/load interconnection, system impact studies, power system planning, stability and control, or related fields is preferred.
- Client and Business Development: Proven success in engaging customers and driving business growth.
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience in leading project teams to deliver complex power system study projects for national and international clients.
- Regional Knowledge: Familiarity with ERCOT and/or MISO interconnection and system planning study procedures.
- Power System Analysis: Advanced knowledge in areas like contingency analysis, voltage stability, small signal stability, transient stability, and control system tuning in frequency and time domains.
- Modeling Expertise: Proficient in power system modeling techniques and algorithms, with experience in generator and renewable model development or validation (RMS & EMT) from field testing.
- Simulation Tools: Expertise in simulation and analysis tools such as DSATools, PSS/E, and PSCAD.
- Regulatory Compliance: Experience in conducting NERC and regional utility reliability compliance studies.
- Excellent leadership, team building and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage the successful implementation and delivery of products and services to clients on time and within budget.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills including the ability to build successful relationships, make presentations to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with peers in industry.
- Have a customer focused mindset and understand the of value regular customer engagement.
- Entrepreneurial with proven track record in business development success.
- Understanding of annual planning, budgeting and business forecasting.
- Broad technical knowledge of the utility business with recognized technical expertise.
- Knowledge of environmental, socio-economic and public interest issues and their impact on area of expertise.
- Demonstrated rigor in modeling awareness and behaviors for working safely in laboratories and the field.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Able to adapt to a constrained schedule and perform under pressure.
