Musical Theater Co-Director & pianist - Kids' Cabaret
The New School of Music is seeking an energetic, creative, and collaborative musical theater educator to co-direct a full-day, three-week summer musical theater program for children ages 7–12. This is a hands-on leadership role for an artist-educator who is passionate about theater, music, and working with young performers.
Program Dates & Schedule
Dates: Monday, July 13 – Friday, July 31
(Final performance on the afternoon of Friday, July 31)Program Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
Director Contract Hours: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, including one paid 60-minute meal break daily
Position Overview
Co-directors work as a team to design and lead a creative, immersive musical theater experience. Students collaboratively write, rehearse, and perform an original musical, gaining foundational skills in singing, acting, movement, and theatrical storytelling.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with a co-director to design and implement a three-week musical theater curriculum
Guide students through the creation of an original musical, including script development, music, and staging
Lead daily sessions in singing, acting, movement/dance, improvisation, and theater games
Support students in basic prop and set design
Provide musical direction, including composing and accompanying original music (piano required)
Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment that encourages teamwork, creativity, and confidence
Prepare students for a final performance for family and friends
Program Description
In this three-week musical theater intensive, young performers design, write, and stage their own original production. Students explore the fundamentals of acting, singing, dancing, scriptwriting, and staging through hands-on activities and collaborative projects. Musical theater and pop repertoire are used to build ear training, vocal technique, and musical literacy, while improvisation and movement games promote creativity and ensemble skills. The program culminates in a fully staged original musical performance.
COMPENSATION: $1,100 weekly stipend / $3,300 totalQualifications:
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Music, Education, or a related field (preferred)
Minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching school-age children
Strong music direction skills; piano proficiency required
Experience creating and implementing musical theater curriculum or lesson plans
Experience with choreography and staging is a plus
Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, creative environment
A genuine passion for theater education and working with children
