ADULT EDUCATION COUNSELOR - CJSC

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Adult Education Counselor will be part of the multi-disciplinary team at the Franklin County Community Justice Support Center (FCCJSC). The FCCJSC provides treatment, education, career counseling, and case management support to individuals with involvement in the criminal justice system. They will be responsible for providing quality educational services at FCCJSC by helping participants pursue their educational goals and requirements. In addition to supporting the educational component of the FCCJSC program they will be knowledgeable in providing quality treatment at the center, and will be responsible for carrying a client caseload, treatment planning, and facilitating a variety of groups. They will display and encourage the character traits of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility in the fulfillment of all job duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives direct supervision from the CJSC Treatment Manager, or an employee of higher grade, who provides instruction and guidance, assigns work and reviews performance through oral and written reports for adherence to policy and conformance with rules and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure that all counseling services are consistent with the operation policies of the Office of Community Corrections (OCC), Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and other regulatory agencies. Must be able to work at least one evening per week and if needed, be available to work two Saturday mornings per month. Develop and implement adult basic education and transitions to college classes and individual education goals. Provide individual and classroom instruction as needed. Administer TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) tests. Score tests and ensure records are maintained in educational files. Assess the educational abilities of clients and assist in appropriate placement. Provide a safe learning environment utilizing motivational interviewing and trauma informed strategies. Work closely with colleges that administer high school equivalency exams (eg HiSet, GED, etc.). Ensure the timely registration of participants who are eligible to take high school equivalency exams. Assist clients with College Admissions, financial aid applications as needed. Responsible for verification of client's high school diplomas, GED or HiSet. Perform case management for clients at the Center. Facilitate manualized Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) groups and classes to fidelity. Document participant interaction by keeping data and information updated in the client file. Compete intake assessments utilizing assessment tools (e.g. ORAS, LS/RNR, TCUDS, etc.); assess risks/responsivity needs; and help develop treatment plans for each assigned participant. Utilize technology for programming needs. Transport or conduct drug testing for participants upon staffing deficiencies. Participate in all meetings and trainings as requested by the supervisors(s). Ability to travel to required meetings and training. Perform other job responsibilities as directed by the supervisor(s).

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a related field; a valid MA Teaching Certificate preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong, enthusiastic commitment to helping clients develop the skills needed to successfully complete their educational goals. A proven ability to work well in a multi-racial/cultural setting and at-risk populations. Computer skills: Google Suite, Word, Excel, Power Point. Must be able to walk, sit, stand, drive and bend during the work day. Strong organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Knowledge of the English language including spelling, word meaning and word usage. Regular and predictable work attendance. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. Ability to adapt to varying work situations. Ability to maintain accurate records, determine proper format and procedure for assembling items of information and prepare reports. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $49,769.46 - $52,156.52

GRADE: 12

FRINGE BENEFITS: Full fringe benefit entitlements in accordance with State and FCSO
