Machine Operator (Automated Screw Machine Operator)

Job Summary

The Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of automated screw machines used in the manufacturing process. This role involves loading raw materials, setting up machinery, monitoring machine operations, performing routine maintenance, inspecting finished products, and ensuring production quality standards are met. The operator works closely with production teams to maintain workflow efficiency, equipment performance, and workplace safety.

This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to follow established operating procedures in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities1. Machine Operation
  • Operate automated screw machines according to production schedules and work instructions.
  • Start, stop, and monitor machine cycles to ensure smooth production flow.
  • Ensure machines are operating within specified parameters and production requirements.
  • Maintain consistent production output while minimizing downtime.
2. Material Loading and Unloading
  • Load raw materials such as bars, rods, or metal stock into machines.
  • Unload finished components and place them in designated bins or containers.
  • Ensure proper handling of materials to prevent damage or waste.
  • Transport materials safely between storage areas and production workstations.
3. Machine Setup
  • Prepare equipment for production runs based on job specifications.
  • Install tooling, adjust machine settings, and verify setup accuracy.
  • Perform test runs to ensure products meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Make basic machine adjustments as needed during production.
4. Product Quality Inspection
  • Inspect finished parts using measuring devices and gauges.
  • Verify product dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Identify defects such as scratches, cracks, incorrect dimensions, or machining errors.
  • Segregate non-conforming products and report quality concerns immediately.
  • Maintain quality records as required.
5. Preventive Maintenance
  • Perform routine machine maintenance tasks including:
    • Oil changes
    • Coolant changes
    • Lubrication of moving parts
    • Cleaning machine components
  • Monitor equipment condition and identify signs of wear or malfunction.
  • Report maintenance issues to supervisors or maintenance technicians.
  • Assist with scheduled preventive maintenance activities.
6. Production Monitoring
  • Monitor machine performance throughout the shift.
  • Observe machine operations for unusual noises, vibrations, or operational problems.
  • Report equipment breakdowns and process issues promptly.
  • Support continuous production by minimizing interruptions.
7. Housekeeping and Workplace Organization
  • Keep the production area clean and organized.
  • Sweep, mop, and clean workstations regularly.
  • Dispose of scrap materials and waste properly.
  • Follow 5S and workplace organization standards.
  • Maintain safe walking and working areas around equipment.
8. Packing and Material Handling
  • Pack finished products according to company procedures.
  • Unpack incoming materials when necessary.
  • Label products and packaging accurately.
  • Prepare products for transfer to the next manufacturing process or shipping department.
9. Support Production Operations
  • Assist primary machine operators as required.
  • Monitor machine operations during scheduled operator breaks.
  • Follow detailed instructions from supervisors and lead operators.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to meet production goals.
10. Safety Compliance
  • Follow all plant safety rules and OSHA/manufacturing safety regulations.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions.
  • Ensure safe material handling and equipment operation at all times.
Required QualificationsEducation
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
Experience
  • Previous machine operating experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
  • Experience handling raw materials and finished goods.
  • Familiarity with production processes and manufacturing equipment.
Essential SkillsTechnical Skills
  • Experience operating manufacturing machinery.
  • Basic machine setup knowledge.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to use hand tools effectively.
  • Experience using measuring devices such as:
    • Tape measures
    • Calipers

Mechanical Skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Understanding of machine functions and operations.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot minor machine issues.
Quality Control Skills
  • Ability to inspect parts for dimensional accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of quality standards and inspection procedures.
Communication Skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective communication with supervisors and team members.
  • Ability to report production and maintenance issues accurately.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move materials.
  • Capability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with machinery noise and moving equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating automated screw machines.
  • Knowledge of CNC or production machinery.
  • Experience reading blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Previous manufacturing or machining experience.
  • Understanding of basic machining principles.
  • Experience working in team-based production environments.
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing and production facility setting.
  • Exposure to mechanical equipment, lubricants, coolants, and production materials.
  • Use of required PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.
  • Fast-paced production environment with quality and productivity targets.
Schedule

Monday through Friday

  • Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Full-time position
  • Consistent weekday schedule with predictable hours

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Agawam, MA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
