Employment Type: Full Time, Benefits Eligible, Exempt, MNGT

Department: Camps & Immersives

Reporting to: Camp Director

Start Date: ASAP

Salary Range: $52,000 - $56,000 plus competitive benefits package

The Role

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Crane Lake Camp is seeking a passionate, organized, and mission-driven Assistant Director to help lead our vibrant summer camp and year-round youth and family engagement programs. In this role, you’ll help create a warm, inclusive, and transformative Jewish community where campers of all identities—Campers of Color, LGBTQ+ campers, campers with disabilities, and others—build confidence, connection, and a lifelong sense of belonging. You’ll play a key role in camp operations, communications, and community engagement, contributing to the strategic growth and values-driven impact of Crane Lake Camp and the URJ Camping System.

What You Will Do

CAMP LEADERSHIP

  • Collaborate with the Crane Lake’s leadership team to support all aspects of camp operations, culture, and programming.

  • Build meaningful connections among campers, families, alumni, and staff from diverse backgrounds, promoting inclusion and lifelong URJ engagement.

  • Serve as a member of the professional camp team and participate in the URJ Camping System’s national cohort, engaging in shared projects and professional development.

  • Assist with physical and logistical summer preparations, including inventory, purchasing, setup, and facility readiness.

  • Champion and model URJ’s values around Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) and Jewish learning in all aspects of the work.

Marketing, Communications & Outreach

  • Serve as a point of contact for camper families throughout the year, supporting enrollment, onboarding, and ongoing communication.

  • Develop and manage engaging content across newsletters, social media, and the camp website to share our story and expand our reach.

  • Design and execute a dynamic social media strategy, creating or overseeing the production of original photo, video, and graphic content for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok.

  • Maintain and update the camp website regularly with relevant, timely content.

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director and URJ Development teams to support donor communications and engagement events.

  • Manage email and CRM systems (Salesforce and Marketing Cloud), maintaining accurate data and outreach lists.

  • Coordinate with URJ’s central Marketing & Communications team to ensure consistent messaging and optimized impact.

Camp & Staff Engagement

  • Actively support efforts to recruit, hire, and retain campers and seasonal staff through tours, events, and relationship-building efforts.

  • Supervise designated staff and summer operations, ensuring smooth logistics and a strong camp culture.

  • Assist in designing and facilitating comprehensive staff training and development programs.

  • Contribute to the creation and facilitation of retreats and year-round programs that extend the impact of the Crane Lake experience beyond the summer.

Who You Are

You are a relationship-driven, detail-oriented leader who thrives in collaborative environments and brings a deep commitment to inclusion, community-building, and Jewish life. You’re passionate about the transformative power of camp, skilled in communication and project management, and excited to create meaningful, year-round engagement for campers, families, and staff.

Keys to Success (the must-haves)

  • Relationship Building & Community Engagement: You have strong interpersonal skills and a natural ability to build meaningful relationships with campers, families, alumni, staff, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. You’re comfortable and confident representing camp with warmth and professionalism at events, tours, and meetings.

  • Communication & Marketing Expertise: You’re a skilled communicator with experience in writing, content creation, and storytelling across digital and print platforms. You’ve managed websites, social media, and email/CRM tools like Salesforce and Marketing Cloud, and you know how to craft messaging that aligns with broader organizational goals.

  • Program & Project Management: You have excellent organizational skills and can manage multiple projects, timelines, and logistics, especially during the lead-up to and throughout the camp season. You balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution, from operational planning to delivering year-round engagement experiences.

  • Leadership & Team Collaboration: You bring the ability to co-lead camp operations, support staff, and work closely with the leadership team. You’ve supervised, mentored, and developed seasonal or year-round staff and thrive in a collaborative environment, working across teams and systems to achieve shared goals.

  • Self-Management & Accountability: You are proactive, dependable, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment. You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and hold yourself to high standards of excellence, even when juggling competing priorities.

  • Commitment to Inclusion & REDI Values: You are deeply committed to Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) and actively foster environments where campers and staff of all identities feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

  • Camping: You bring a genuine passion for summer camp and understand its transformative power in the lives of young people. You have experience working with children in immersive environments, ideally as a professional staff member at a residential summer camp or a comparable setting. You’re ready to represent and champion Crane Lake Camp and the Union for Reform Judaism in the larger Jewish and professional camping communities.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant experience in camp leadership, youth engagement, education, or a related field.

  • Experience working in residential summer camps or immersive environments is strongly preferred.

  • Weekend travel for staff and camper recruitment.

  • Occasional travel to and from camp and URJ staff meetings, professional development and/or staff programs.

  • Live in residence at camp during summer season.
