Instructor history of technology

Wentworth Institute of Technology
Boston, MA

Job Description

The School of Sciences & Humanities at Wentworth Institute of Technology invites applications for a part-time instructor to teach HIST 4191 – History of Technology in Spring 2026.

This 4-credit, in-person course meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:00–2:45 p.m. on Wentworth’s Boston campus.

Course Description:
This course examines the history of technology and its relationship to social and historical change. Students analyze how successive technological revolutions—from industrialization to the digital era—have shaped work, communication, energy, and the environment. Emphasis is placed on the social contexts of invention, innovation, and adoption, as well as the ethical and political questions that accompany technological change

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in History, History of Science and Technology, Science and Technology Studies, or a closely related social science or humanities field (PhD or ABD preferred).

  • At least one year of college-level teaching or equivalent professional training in history or technology studies.

Professional or Research Experience:

  • Demonstrated research, scholarship, or applied work in the history of technology, industrial history, or science and technology studies.

  • Experience engaging historical materials, archives, case studies, or public history projects related to technological change.

  • Ability to connect historical developments in technology to contemporary issues such as sustainability, globalization, and ethics.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Skill in presenting technology’s history from multiple perspectives—economic, cultural, environmental, and political—without ideological bias.
  • Commitment to evidence-based, politically balanced instruction that encourages students to form their own well-supported interpretations.
  • Facility with digital-humanities tools (e.g., mapping, timeline, or archival visualization) that enhance student engagement.
  • Experience designing interdisciplinary, discussion-driven courses for students in STEM and applied sciences.

Please submit CV and contact information.

Adjunct faculty compensation varies based on instructional mode (lecture or lab), number of course credits, and program. The minimum adjunct rate is $1,365 per credit.
