Seasonal Head Counselor
Job Description
Job Description
Position Summary:
Ready to lead, mentor, and make a lasting impact? Camp Bauercrest is searching for a Head Counselor who’s passionate about building community, inspiring young leaders, and shaping unforgettable summers. As a key member of our Senior Leadership Team, you’ll be at the heart of the action—guiding counselors, supporting campers, and helping create the safe, spirited, and inclusive environment that defines Bauercrest.
In this role, you’ll be a champion for camper wellbeing—ensuring every child feels supported, included, and cared for. You’ll also serve as a vital bridge between camp and families, partnering with parents to share updates, address concerns, and celebrate camper successes. If you thrive on connection, love coaching others, and want to be a role model for both staff and campers, this is your chance to make a difference while growing as a leader.
What You’ll Do:
- Build and Empower Your Team: Connect with your staff before the summer begins, set the tone for a collaborative season, and help develop dynamic training sessions that prepare everyone for success.
- Lead by Example: Provide hands-on supervision, mentorship, and feedback to bunk counselors—helping them grow, solve challenges, and create positive experiences for every camper.
- Champion Camper Wellbeing: Be a daily presence in bunks and around camp, making sure counselors and campers feel supported, included, and engaged. Proactively address social, emotional, and behavioral needs to ensure every camper thrives.
- Manage Camper Behavior: Implement positive behavior support strategies, guide counselors in effective behavior management, and address discipline issues with fairness, consistency, and compassion.
- Partner with Parents and Families: Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, providing updates on camper progress, addressing any concerns, and celebrating camper milestones.
- Model Respect and Inclusion: Foster an environment where every camper belongs, healthy relationships flourish, and teachable moments are embraced.
- Drive Staff Development: Conduct formal and informal evaluations, offer constructive feedback, and help counselors reach their full potential.
- Collaborate on Programming: Work with Group Leaders, the Program Director, and the Camp Director to plan and deliver engaging daily activities and unforgettable special events.
- Keep Camp Running Smoothly: Supervise bunk clean-up, facilitate evening programs, and help with anything that keeps camp positive, safe, and fun.
- Be a Trusted Communicator: Keep the Director informed, share insights, and help resolve any issues with professionalism and care.
Why This Role is a Game-Changer for You:
- Leadership in Action: Take on a pivotal role where your mentorship and energy shape the camp experience for both counselors and campers.
- Professional Growth: Build skills in coaching, team management, behavior support, and youth development—laying the foundation for future leadership roles.
- Community Impact: Help create a summer of growth, connection, and lifelong memories.
- Collaborative Culture: Work alongside passionate leaders who value teamwork, creativity, and making a difference.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in education, recreation, or related field.
- Previous camp staff experience, ideally in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Proven ability to mentor, coach, and inspire young staff.
- Experience connecting with youth ages 7–22.
- Excellent communication skills—whether leading a group or supporting individuals.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and reflective.
- Team player who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven setting.
- Coaching experience a plus.
