About the Role
Saheli seeks a dedicated and experienced Staff Attorney to lead its Legal Advocacy Program and advance justice for survivors of domestic violence across Massachusetts. This role focuses on providing compassionate, survivor-centered legal representation, primarily in Probate and Family Court , while also strengthening community-based legal support through clinics, workshops, and partnerships.
The Staff Attorney will play a key leadership role by mentoring legal assistants, collaborating with community and institutional partners, and engaging in outreach with the legal community, courts, law enforcement, healthcare providers, child welfare agencies, and schools to improve access to justice and promote systemic change.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent clients in a range of legal proceedings—including restraining orders, child support, child custody, and divorce hearings—and prepare legal documents such as motions, agreements, and other court filings.
- Engage in frequent courtroom litigation and advocacy, with a demonstrated ability to fully prepare and master case facts, written pleadings, and oral arguments efficiently and effectively under, at times, time sensitive and high-pressure circumstances
- Establish and maintain a confidential attorney-client relationship, conduct thorough assessments, and maintain regular contact throughout the case .
- Work closely with domestic and sexual violence advocates to ensure trauma-informed legal support.
- Ensure compliance with all Board of Bar Overseers (BBO) ethics standards, including confidentiality and ethical conflicts of interest
- Respond to emergency situations, providing immediate legal counsel and taking appropriate legal actions.
- Provide legal education workshops to community members on issues related to domestic violence.
- Supervise the Legal Assistant and manage legal clinics in coordination with contract attorneys as needed.
- Maintain detailed records of case activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with legal service providers and advocacy organizations.
- Stay informed about current developments in family law.
- Travel to courthouses across Massachusetts as needed.
- Flexibility for very occasional evening work when necessary.
Qualifications
- Admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.
- Candidates with 4-5 years of litigation experience are preferred, including experience with Abuse Prevention Order/Harassment Prevention Order proceedings, criminal matters, and/or Family/Probate Law proceedings.
- Candidates must possess strong oral and written communication skills, with the capability of handling all aspects of complex matters that coincide with assisting survivors of domestic violence.
- Experience working with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse teams and client communities and demonstrated skill and self-awareness in how to effectively connect with clients and communities across cultural differences
- Ability to manage multiple projects and cases simultaneously and with flexibility, and to prioritize competing deadlines; comfortable working independently and in a team.
- Experience working with clients impacted by domestic violence, crime, trauma, and/or mental health challenges; direct experience supporting survivors of domestic violence is highly preferred. Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage sensitive and complex matters accurately and effectively.
- Reliable car/transportation as attorneys must regularly travel to courthouses and meetings throughout the Greater Boston and MetroWest areas and other areas as needed.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proficiency in English is required; bilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
