Protection & Control Relay Technician – Technical Lead
Location: Northeastern U.S. (Initial assignment based at posted job location; regional responsibility across the Northeast, with emphasis on New England area)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Protection & Control Relay Technician – Technical Lead to support and lead substation construction projects across the Northeastern United States. This role will begin at the location listed in the job posting , but the long-term area of responsibility spans the broader Northeast region, with a strong concentration in New England .
This is a key leadership position for a hands-on technical professional who thrives in the field, takes ownership of complex protection and control systems, and enjoys mentoring others while delivering high-quality results on both Greenfield and Brownfield substation projects .
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the technical lead for Protection & Control relay activities on substation construction projects
- Perform and oversee:
- Relay installation, wiring verification, and commissioning
- Functional testing, end-to-end testing, and troubleshooting of protective relays
- Substation control, metering, and SCADA-related systems
- Interpret and apply protection and control drawings, schematics, and logic diagrams
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure safe, efficient execution
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to relay technicians and field crews
- Support outage planning and execution in live substation environments
- Maintain compliance with safety standards, client requirements, and company procedures
Where You’ll Work
- Initial assignment will be based at the location posted in the job ad
- Ongoing work will require regular travel throughout the Northeastern U.S. , with a primary focus on New England
- This is a field-focused role for someone comfortable working where the projects are
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in Protection & Control relay work within high-voltage substations
- Strong working knowledge of utility-grade protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, etc.)
- Experience on both Greenfield and Brownfield substation construction projects
- Ability to lead technically, solve problems independently, and make sound field decisions
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the Northeast
Requirements
- Must be willing to travel and work in multiple states across the Northeastern U.S.
- Must have own vehicle
- Clean driving record for the past 7 years
- Class A CDL is a plus , but not required
- Associate of Science in applied field (electronics, power systems , information).
- Associates of Arts with pre-electrical engineering electives.
- Competent in the understanding and application of Algebra and Trigonometry as it pertains to electrical theory and testing calculations.
- Proficiency with calculations of 3 phase, transformer, circuit analysis, etc. parameters.
- Proficiency in setting and testing overcurrent microprocessor-based relays.
- One (1) year of field experience in controls or control panel wiring.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with ANSI/NETA testing requirements and procedures.
- Two (2) years of field experience in protection and control systems.
