Part-Time Peer Mentor - Spring/Summer I 2026
Campus Location: Remote and Lynn (hybrid) Remote and Danvers (hybrid)
Work Schedule: Varies; 8-14 hours per week, may include evenings and weekends. (student will work with coordinator to create their own schedule)
SALARY:$17.30/hr.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The goal of peer mentorship is to promote persistence from semester to semester and a successful academic experience at North Shore Community College by helping students build academic skills, support community-building and social adjustment. As peer mentors, student staff serve as a point of contact for new and returning students at the College, helping them identify obstacles to their academic performance and support them in finding solutions for overcoming those challenges with the goal of completing their academic program of choice. Peer mentors are students who have demonstrated success at NSCC, at other colleges, or within the workforce, who can share their experience with other students. Peer mentors participate in required training sessions, team meetings, and other activities to support the program as required.
This position is designed for NSCC students and recent NSCC alumni. Other eligible candidates may include NSCC students who have been successful in other college settings and/or NSCC students who have a history of successful employment. We ask our peer staff to commit to the position for at least 2 semesters. The mission of North Shore Community College's Tutoring and Academic Support Centers is to support the learning efforts of the students, faculty teaching, and the larger goals within each program of study.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Attend required training sessions and team meetings throughout the semester.
- Build connections with assigned students by maintaining active support through check-ins and offering reminders, and using multiple communication platforms (e.g., phone, email, chats, google messaging, and Zoom video meetings).
- Assist students with non-subject specific academic preparation such as time management, study skills, and academic technologies based on professional development and personal experience.
- Assist students in developing better habits by engaging in self-assessment practices to help mentees better understand their strengths and barriers with the goal of developing action plans or academic goals.
- Foster a supportive and non-judgmental environment where mentees feel comfortable sharing their challenges, concerns, and aspirations.
- Assist students in identifying barriers, explore solutions, and leverage resources by encouraging students to take an active role in their learning.
- Help students connect with other services that can assist them in their academic and professional goals such as Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Accessibility and Wellness Services, etc.
- Maintain a working knowledge of services provided by other areas of the college to ease the students' college success journey and help students demystify college policies and procedures.
- Track and maintain accurate records of conversations and interventions with students using Navigate and other authorized systems; follow professional guidelines of interaction and FERPA or HIPAA regulations as necessary to help foster safe and trusting mentor-mentee relationship.
- Offer referrals to Tutoring or other services as needed.
- Support program outreach efforts (eg. tabling, peer engagement, class visits).
- Represent program at designated NSCC events (on- and off-campus).
- Meet with supervisory staff regularly with the goal of collaborating and brainstorming ideas to enhance the program's effectiveness.
- Perform other duties as necessary and as requested by the supervisor.
Job Requirements:
- Be in good academic standing at North Shore Community College and/or have a demonstrable record of successful academic performance and/or professional performance.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in either of NSCC's campuses.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Cooperates and works well with both peers and supervisors.
- Ability to work remotely if needed with access to reliable internet for regular video conference activities.
- Demonstrates qualities of patience and empathy; respect for students of all genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
- Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations
- Problem-solver with the ability to locate and disseminate the appropriate resources according to student need.
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recommendation from an NSCC staff or faculty member (in the form of a letter or contact information); have completed at least 6 credit hours at NSCC.
