Job Description

The Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a faculty position in studio applied oboe. This is a full-time nine-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin September 1 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach applied oboe lessons and studio classes to undergraduate and graduate music majors and minors. Additional teaching responsibilities may include overseeing beginning oboe techniques class for music education majors and chamber music coaching. Assignment will depend on the candidates areas of expertise and the needs of the department.

  • Maintain national and regional visibility as a performer/pedagogue. Participate in and organize on-campus faculty performances.

  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students participate in auditions serve on committees and perform other university and professional service as appropriate.

  • Candidate must be willing and available to address responsibilities during the regular work week and on weekends as needed. Recruiting activities may include visiting secondary schools offering workshops participating in summer programs and adjudicating.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in oboe performance preferred; a Masters Degree (required) in a related field will be considered.

  • Potential for or an already established national reputation as an oboist.

  • Evidence of excellence in teaching as well as a high potential for recruiting at the university level.

  • Ability to work effectively within the department.

Additional Information

Salary is commensurate with experience. This position is a 9-month academic year appointment at 100%FTE with full benefits.

Salary Information

The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $79350 and $102086 for this position. Please note:

  • The low-end of the pay range in all faculty searches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA.

  • The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median of salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience.

  • The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
