This is a full-time 40 hour a week position. (Schedule is 4 days, 10 hour shifts)
THE POSITION:
The Senior Microbiology Medical Technologist (MT) works in collaboration with the veterinary staff and the Pathology team to provide Angell clientele with high quality clinical and anatomical laboratory services. The Senior Microbiology MT will assist in the opening of the new, state of the art Microbiology laboratory. The Senior Microbiology MT will help set up the laboratory space and workflow, train on all new Microbiology analyzers, train laboratory employees on microbiology procedures, develop and modify existing and new procedures and protocols, establish and monitor QC programs and help oversee the microbiology laboratory when required by Management. The Senior Microbiology MT uses a variety of technical and analytical skills to perform and evaluate various laboratory test procedures to aid the doctors in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients to provide accurate and timely results. The Senior Microbiology MT will be cross trained into the Clinical Pathology laboratory as a generalist after becoming proficient in the microbiology laboratory. This position also requires collaboration and daily interaction with the clinical pathology laboratory. Working knowledge of current Microbiology practices, use of Maldi-Tof technology and the most updated CLSI and ASM guidelines is a preferred. Experience reading and evaluating all microbiology benches both human and veterinary is optimal.
Some of the duties include:
- Possesses and demonstrates technical and theoretical knowledge of clinical and veterinary Microbiology.
- Responsible for reading all microbiology culture plates and processing all appropriate testing for those cultures.
- Responsible for the training of new and current employees in the microbiology laboratory. Updates training protocols and procedures as needed. Accurately records, discusses and troubleshoots trainee’s progress with the supervisor and lab management. Provides timely feedback for all trainees to lab management as needed.
- Performs clinical testing and complex analysis of biological materials. Testing includes analysis of not only patient specimens but also proficiency samples, quality control (QC) material and calibration of methods, equipment and instruments.
- Evaluates patient test results to verify validity of results and identify and resolve any inconsistencies in patient results. Provides clinical expertise to the patient care staff with the interpretation of results and/or complex laboratory problems.
- Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and resolves issues with laboratory instrumentation, equipment and test assays. Documents minor repairs and maintenance procedures. Consistently uses available resources to maintain and repair instruments or problem solves assay issues.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
Education : Graduate of NAACLs accredited Clinical Laboratory Science program with certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Microbiology Specialist (M ASCP) by ASCP or other nationally recognized credentialing agency is required. Bachelor of Science in a medical discipline with 5+ years of veterinary or human microbiology bench reading experience will be considered.
Experience: 5+ years of current Microbiology bench reading experience is preferred. Both veterinary and human microbiology experience will be considered.
