Description & Requirements
The Stevens lab is looking for a motivated and energetic Research Associate to join the neurobiology group at the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research. This is an exciting opportunity to support and collaboratively develop new research into neuroimmune interactions, brain development, and genetic risk factors for schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurological disorders.
The Stevens lab uses animal and cell culture model systems to understand the development and functions of diverse brain cell types, synapses and circuits. The lab collaborates widely across the neurobiology, genetics and therapeutics divisions of the Stanley Center, and with platforms, programs, and investigators throughout the Broad, Boston Children’s Hospital, and beyond. The successful candidate will have exposure to a variety of projects and contribute towards the overall goals of the Stanley Center to improve mental health through groundbreaking basic and translational research.
This position will contribute specifically to projects that use stem cell-derived glial and neuronal cultures to better understand glia-neuron interactions in health and disease. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in molecular or cell biology or a related field. Relevant knowledge and skills include cell culture & sterile technique; basic molecular & cell biology (e.g., PCR,DNA/RNA/protein purification, Western blotting); immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. Attention to detail, careful note and record keeping, and a team-oriented approach are critical. This position will provide an outstanding foundation for a career in science, medicine, or biotechnology.
In this position, you will:
- Work with team members and collaborators to design and carry out experiments essential to the group's collective success.
- Consult the literature, supervisor, and other scientific staff as needed to troubleshoot experiments.
- Prepare and maintain cell cultures, including induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and derived neurons and glia.
- Perform basic immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy and image analysis.
- Investigate, learn, and develop new methods and technologies that might be relevant to the project.
- Attend and present at team meetings and contribute to experimental design and brainstorming.
- Prepare and maintain stocks of necessary reagents, solutions and supplies.
- Assist with equipment maintenance, laboratory organization, and training new lab members.
- Maintain detailed experimental records, documentation, and written protocols.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in molecular or cell biology, neuroscience, or a related field.
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
- High level of initiative and motivation; ability to work independently and with a team.
- Ability to think creatively to solve problems.
- Experience with one or more of the following is preferred: cell culture, molecular cloning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy.
- Curiosity to learn new things and a passion to make a difference in the lives of patients by advancing the science of psychiatric disease.
The expected base pay range for this position as listed above is based on a 40 hour per week schedule. Broad provides pay ranges representing its reasonable and good faith estimate of what the organization reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary based on factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, education, qualifications, and other factors permissible by law.
