Job Description:
The Department of Public Safety/Campus Police at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) invites applications for a Campus Police Officer I. This is an armed position, Officer will patrol the campus buildings, grounds, and areas adjacent to the College, enforcing state and federal laws and MCLA rules and regulations. This Officer will also ensure the safety, security and well-being of the College community through: investigating crimes and other incidents; restraining and/or arresting suspects when necessary; completing crime and incident reports; providing assistance to courts in prosecution cases; and performing other related work in accordance with campus needs.
Requirements:
- Eligibility for appointment as a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 22C, Section 63 and must obtain Special State Police Powers from the Massachusetts State Police
- Must have graduated from a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer (SSPO) Academy OR Must have graduated from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) full-time Police Academy or other full-time reciprocal Police Academy
- If the candidate is not Police Academy trained, that candidate must be physically fit and able to successfully complete a full-time MPTC or SSPO training academy, to include all perquisites (which includes physical endurance testing). Failure to meet the entrance requirements or to successfully complete the course of training shall result in dismissal or, for lateral appointment within the bargaining unit, return to previously held position in accordance with the AFSCME Agreement.
- Must be able to pass the following pre-employment examinations: fit-for-duty physical and psychological assessments under the auspices of the Campus Police Department, as well as a thorough background check to include Criminal Offender Records Information
- Must have a criminal history free of ANY felony convictions
- Must have and retain a valid driver's license
- Must have or be able to obtain and retain a Massachusetts license to carry a firearm
- Must be able to stand and or walk for prolonged periods of time; while wearing issued and approved equipment (duty belt, protective body armor etc.).
- Ability to lift heavy objects or persons and possess physical stamina and endurance
- Must be able to work with diverse populations and have the ability to deal with young adults, faculty, and staff in a multicultural, multiracial environment
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to obtain a CPR/First Responder certification and training in the operation of Automated External Defibrillator
- Ability to successfully complete initial and annual firearms qualification training
- Ability to successfully complete annual in-service training requirements
- Computer literacy in the department's law enforcement technology preferred, including: word processing, LEAPS, ID equipment, various alarm systems/computers, and other security-related software
- Ability to obtain certification as a Law Enforcement Administration System Computer Operator
- Ability to complete Incident Command System training
- A basic knowledge and understanding of police procedures and how those procedures are adapted to an educational community, preferred
- Ability to work varied work schedules and shifts based on assignment and the needs of the Department/College
- Must successfully complete the required Field Training Officer Program
Additional Information:
The shift for this position is Sunday-Thursday Midnight-8am with Friday and Saturday off.
This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, (Grade 16, Step 1) position in the AFSCME bargaining unit. Biweekly salary is $2,224.42. Weekend and shift differential eligible.
Preference may be given to applicants who have graduated from a full-time Massachusetts Police Academy.

provides eligible employees with a retirement pension following a 10-year vesting period. In lieu of the retirement pension, eligible
employees may select the Optional Retirement Plan with a maximum 5% employer matching contribution.
