GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the application of journeyman skills and knowledge in installing, altering, and repairing water, gas, and sewage disposal systems, equipment, appliances, and fixtures in Town and School buildings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strong commercial boiler experience required. Candidate must demonstrate hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large-scale commercial boiler systems, hydronic heating, and related mechanical equipment.
  • New plumbing installations to include drain, waste and vent piped systems using PVC, copper or cast iron materials.
  • New domestic water system to include hot and cold-water distribution using copper or CPVC piping.
  • Performs maintenance and mechanical repairs of boilers, hot water systems, chillers and HVAC related equipment.
  • Replace/repair/maintain faucets, valves, pressure regulators, plumbing fixtures,) sinks, toilets, urinals, water coolers, hot water heaters, pumps, sewer ejectors, grease traps, flush meters, and backflow devices.
  • Drain cleaning of sewer, and other gravity drain systems.
  • Natural gas piping systems repairs or new distribution.
  • Respond to plumbing emergencies as required.
  • Perform maintenance on steam traps including repair for replacement of same.
  • Perform miscellaneous manual labor relevant to plumbing system(s) work as assigned.
  • Perform plumbing systems work on all public buildings including school and municipal facilities.
  • Inspecting and testing plumbing systems for safety, functionality and code compliance.
  • Troubleshoot / investigate plumbing related issues and implement repair using “in-house” or outsourced providers.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, sketches related to plumbing work.
  • Knowledge of applied practice, techniques, tools and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.
  • Assist other tradesmen (HVAC, Electrical, carpentry, etc.) with miscellaneous building related tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other coworkers, supervisors and stakeholders.
  • Maintain repair and maintenance records.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Performs other manual duties related to plumbing work and will work in conjunction with contracted trades as necessary.
  • Performs similar duties as required, assigned or as the situation dictates.

MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience:

High School / Trade School Diploma, GED equivalent and five (5) to 10 (10) years of directly related experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of:

  • C.M.R.’s relating to plumbing systems, Mass State Plumbing and knowledge of the State Building Code, current edition.
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Operate equipment, to use various hand tools to perform manual labor.
  • Exercise prolonged physical labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Handle hazardous chemicals and to work in confined spaces.
  • Read and understand various manuals, blueprints, schematics and instructions.
  • Maintain records/logs.
  • Strictly adhere to and enforce all safety rules and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Compose correspondence.
  • Prioritize and complete multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions.
  • Operate a computer with basic software skills.
  • Use a telephone system.

Skilled in:

  • The use of tools and equipment such as various hand and electric tools.
  • Customer service and organizational skills.
  • Use of all equipment used in maintenance and repair duties of the Department.
  • The latest technologies, tools and equipment.

Special Requirements/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Massachusetts Master or Journeyman’s Plumbers & Gas Fitter Licenses.
  • OSHA 10-Hr Construction Safety and Health Training.
  • Required to work nights and weekends as necessary, especially in response to system failures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Heavy lifting/pushing of 50 pounds or more is regularly required.
  • Special physical effort will be required when performing routine and emergency maintenance. Work consists of prolonged heavy physical labor under adverse weather conditions with exposure to hazards, strong odors and noise.
  • Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Office work is performed under typical office conditions; field work environment is moderately noisy and subject to outdoor conditions. This role is exposed to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, sharp blades or instruments, strong odors, fumes, gases or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, confined spaces, extreme heights, extreme heat; flames; risk of explosion, electrical shock, strong vibration and drowning.
  • Operates utility and treatment equipment; operates computer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, and other standard office equipment. Operates trucks and department equipment.
  • Contacts are by phone, through correspondence, and in person; they generally consist of an information exchange dialogue, discussing complex technical issues.
  • Errors could result in delay of department services, and have legal and/or financial repercussions. Errors may also cause a serious health hazard to the community.
