Job Description

Family Office Director

About the Firm

Harrison Gray Search has partnered with a highly respected family office and investment advisory firm based in Boston. Established in 2006, our client advises a select, global group of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and institutions, overseeing more than $7.5 billion in assets. The firm is known for delivering bespoke investment, financial, and planning solutions tailored to the most sophisticated and complex client situations.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Family Office Director to serve as the trusted, day-to-day leader of a group of ultra-high-net-worth family relationships. This is a senior, client-facing seat on the Family Office Management Team (FOMT). You will act as the quarterback for the families you serve, owning the relationship, coordinating across the firm's investment, planning, tax, and service teams, and making sure every part of each family's financial life is handled with precision and care.

The role blends two things that rarely sit together. On one side, it is a relationship and stewardship role: you are the person the family trusts, the one who understands their goals, anticipates their needs, and brings clarity to complex situations. On the other, it is a substantive financial role: you are fluent in portfolios, comfortable in investment discussions, and deep in the mechanics of estate, trust, and tax planning. You do not need to be the firm's portfolio manager or its tax attorney, but you must be conversant and credible across all of it, and able to drive outcomes by working alongside specialists.

This is a phenomenal opportunity for a wealth management professional who wants to own UHNW family relationships end to end, in an environment that prizes discretion, judgment, and white-glove execution.

Primary Responsibilities

Relationship Leadership. Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for a delegated group of UHNW families. Understand each family's objectives, dynamics, and priorities, and coordinate the full breadth of the firm's resources to serve them.

Estate, Trust, and Tax Coordination. Bring a strong working command of estate, trust, and tax planning to complex, multi-generational client situations. Coordinate closely with in-house and external attorneys, CPAs, and trustees to design and implement wealth transfer, gifting, and tax strategies, and to keep them aligned with each family's long-term goals.

Investment Oversight and Counsel. Provide informed counsel on asset allocation, portfolio structure, and performance. Partner with the investment team to translate strategy into client portfolios, oversee rebalancing and cash management (capital calls, distributions, liquidity needs, and charitable giving), and explain the portfolio clearly to the family.

Planning and Implementation. Draft Investment Policy Statements and implementation memoranda. Lead client onboarding, coordinate asset management and custody relationships, and build the reporting infrastructure that keeps each family's full picture current and accurate.

Operational Oversight. Oversee client servicing for your families, including tax reporting cycles, cost-basis oversight, portfolio administration, and meeting preparation. Proactively troubleshoot implementation, trading, and reporting issues alongside FOMT members and Portfolio Analysts.

Cross-Functional Leadership. Work seamlessly across the firm's Service, Investment, and Advisory teams to deliver a single, integrated solution to each family, and continually improve how the firm serves them.

What You Bring

Experience. 8 to 15 years in wealth management, family office, private client advisory, trust administration, or a closely related field, with genuine experience owning UHNW or HNW client relationships.

Estate and Tax Depth. Real, hands-on fluency in estate, trust, and tax planning. Backgrounds such as private client advisory, trust officer or fiduciary roles, or planning-led wealth management are especially relevant.

Investment Fluency. Comfort with multi-asset portfolios across public and private markets, and the ability to lead credible investment conversations with families. Familiarity with performance reporting and platforms such as Addepar is highly valuable.

Credentials. A bachelor's degree and a passing score on the Series 65 (or equivalent) are required at a minimum. Advanced degrees and certifications such as CFP, CFA, CPA, JD, or LLM are strongly preferred.

Judgment and Service. Exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment under pressure, and a white-glove service standard. You are ready to roll up your sleeves and own the work personally.

Communication. Outstanding written and verbal skills. This role involves extensive client-ready writing, internal memoranda, and clear communication of complex topics, often under deadline.

Discretion and Teamwork. A deep commitment to confidentiality, collaboration, and family office client service. An occasional nontraditional schedule, including some evening or weekend work, may be required to meet client needs.

Logistics and Compensation

Full-time, five days per week in the firm's downtown Boston office. Base compensation in the range of $150,000 to $300,000 depending on experience, plus a performance bonus, with a path to increased responsibility and a long-term incentive and partnership track over time.
