Nurse Practitioner Colorectal Surgery

NURSE PRACTITIONER MS: Outpatient Colorectal Surgery/ Full Time/ 40 Hours/ Foxboro/ Jamaica Plain/ Boston ADDENDUM for Colorectal Surgery Working in collaboration with the Colorectal Section Chief GGI Surgery Administrative Director the Colorectal Surgery NP is a valued member of the colorectal practice team. NP responsibilities include clinical practice on an interdisciplinary care team for patients receiving ambulatory care through the Department of Surgery Division of Colorectal Surgery. The NPs primary role will be focused on the larger colorectal surgery patient population as an advanced practice nurse. The NP will have a supportive role in treating patients who have or are about to undergo the formation of a stoma. The role requires significant interdisciplinary teamwork in acute and community settings. Clinical:- Works in collaboration with the attending physicians.
- Clinic schedule will include sessions primarily located at but not limited to: Surgical Clinic at 21 Patriot Place Foxboro MA Clinic sited at BWFH / Faulkner Hospital at 1153 Centre St Jamaica Plain MA and Boston Main campus as needed.
- These sessions may be held alongside our colorectal surgeons but also may be independent in their absence. Clinics will consist of a mix of benign anorectal disease and pre- & post-op surgical care.
- Administrative time blocked for symptom calls note completion coordination of care prescription ordering and other patient care activities.
- Perform clinical assessment of patients colorectal needs in clinic and pre and post evaluation follow up review of patient record and history patient/caregiver education regarding appliance management and symptoms telephone triage patient education around the management of anorectal disease dysfunctional elimination issues and other related conditions.
- Ensure a seamless patient flow and positive patient experience through the outpatient clinic and across departments.
Candidate will work in collaboration with the attending physicians physician assistants nurses administrative assistants and other providers internal and external to the department.
- Provide extensive patient support for ongoing colorectal needs including equipment management lifestyle education and teaching and symptom management. Responds to clinical questions from patients and physicians in a timely manner; completes administrative tasks such as returning phone calls updating clinic notes and completion of dictations in a timely manner; keep collaborating and referring physicians informed as appropriate.
- Effectively prioritize patient care needs; understand the full range of treatment options available to each patient and have the ability to discuss these with the patient and their family/ partner.

- Demonstrates knowledge of patients nutritional requirements; assists the patient in tracking food and fluid intake.
Operations Support/Administrative Responsibilities:
- Supports ongoing quality initiatives and strives to learn new systems and technologies as they become available to improve patients care documentation and communication. Remains proficient with BWH computer systems as needed to independently.

SummaryThe Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has acquired specialized knowledge and skills through completion of a nurse practitioner program. The practitioner has the credentials to function in an expanded nursing role and is responsible for the daily management of selected patients. The practitioner has responsibility for the assessment and management of patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and the continuous implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care.
The Nurse Practitioner works with their collaborating physician in accordance with mutually developed practice guidelines members of the care team and is responsible to the Nursing Director or Executive Nursing Director for the area for issues specific to the discipline of nursing. Satisfactory completion of an approved formal education program that has as its objective the preparation of professional nurses to practice as nurse practitioners. ANA or other appropriate nursing certification in the area of practice and authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in the expanded role. DEA for prescription writing. Working Conditions - Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable disease and hazardous materials. APRN national certification required.

Qualifications
Education/Licensure:
1. Completion of Masters DNP or PhD Degree in Nursing required. Completion of a Masters or post Masters degree in adult or family NP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) required.
2. Current Adult/Geriatric or Family Nurse Practitioner Certification by an accredited APRN certifying body required.
3. Valid prescriptive authority from both MA DPH and Federal DEA required.
4. Current APRN license to practice in Massachusetts required.
Experience:
1. Minimum 3 years clinical Nurse Practitioner experience in an ambulatory setting required.
2. Minimum 1 year current clinical Nurse Practitioner experience caring for a Colorectal surgical patient population required.
3. Ostomy Nurse Certification strongly preferred.
Other:
ANA or other appropriate nursing certification in the area of practice and authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role. DEA for prescription writing.
