PVPA has an opening for a long-term substitute biology teacher starting immediately and remaining until the school holiday vacation (last day Dec 19, 2025). We are looking for a reflective practitioner who is interested in integrating the arts into the curriculum, teaching with a social justice lens, collaborating with students and colleagues, and has experience in implementing restorative practices in the classroom. The biology curriculum includes laboratory skills, biochemistry and cell biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, biodiversity, ecology, and evolution. Students are expected to display their knowledge both individually and through group work in a variety of ways, including written pieces, class activities, homework, assessments, quizzes and tests, and lab work. This course allows students to make a connection between biology in the classroom and biology in the “real world," as well as prepare students for the Biology MCAS test.
Responsibilities:
- Teach five blocks (classes) that include Biology and a Botany class
- Prepare curricula and instructional materials based on set departmental learning objectives
- Assess student work and provide timely feedback to students and parents via PowerSchool online grading system
- Apply PVPA’s standards-based grading system to report on student course progress and achievement
- Coordinate with special educators to address the diverse needs of all learners
- Supervise students during non-class time (e.g., lunch) as required
- Attend and participate in regular faculty collaborative time meetings and school-wide professional development activities
- Attend and participate in meetings with students and/or parents/guardians as scheduled, including an evening open house, and parent-teacher conferences
- Participate in school-wide events that occur during the school day
- Assist with other faculty administrative duties as required
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree
CORI and Fingerprint background checks
Computer Literacy
Preferred Requirements:
- Two to five years of experience teaching biology in a public or private school
- Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement
- Ability to teach a variety of courses within the discipline
- Knowledge of discipline curriculum standards
- Massachusetts teaching license in subject area
- Supervised by: Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Calendar: School year (ten months)
Salary Range: BA Step 1 $43,268 to MA Step 15 $68,719 (prorated for days worked).
