What You Will Do-

The AI Intern will support Aspen Aerogels’ program management and engineering teams by developing AI-enabled tools, workflows, and decision-support assistants that improve efficiency, consistency, and quality in day-to-day operations.  This role focuses on the practical application of AI, including the design of focused AI tools (e.g., internal ChatGPTs or similar assistants) to support document review, data analysis, decision-making, and cross-functional communication across technical and program-driven workflows.  The internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to how AI can augment engineering judgment and program execution in a manufacturing and advanced materials environment.

In addition to daily support activities, the intern will own an overarching AI project aligned with active business needs. This project will span the duration of the internship and culminate in a final presentation demonstrating impact, lessons learned, and recommendations.

How Will You Do It-

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Support development of AI tools to assist engineering teams with:
  • Technical document review and interpretation
  • Data analysis, reporting, and comparison
  • Quality, inspection, or design review preparation
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure AI outputs are technically sound and positioned as decision support, not decision replacement

Cross-Functional Support

  • Function as a shared AI resource across Program Management, Engineering, Quality, and Operations as priorities require
  • Identify opportunities where AI can reduce manual effort, improve consistency, or accelerate decision-making
  • Support creation and improvement of internal AI best practices, usage guidelines, and templates

Internship Project

  • Own a defined AI-focused project spanning the full duration of the internship
  • Work with a mentor to define project scope, objectives, and success criteria early in the internship
  • Deliver one or more deployable AI tools or workflows that address a real Aspen business or engineering need

Present outcomes, efficiency gains, lessons learned, and recommendations in a final presentation

Why you are right for the job-

  • Completion of a minimum of two years of college-level coursework
  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong interest in applied AI, automation, and process improvement
  • Familiarity with AI tools such as large language models (e.g., ChatGPT) and prompt-based workflows
  • Ability to understand and translate technical and business needs into structured solutions
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with engineers and program managers
  • Experience with manufacturing, quality systems, program management, or technical documentation is a plus but not required.

What This Internship Offers
