Girls’ LEAP Mission: Girls’ LEAP works to disrupt the violence that surrounds girls and gender expansive youth by amplifying their voices, emboldening their courage, and imparting critical life and self-defense skills so they can take on challenges with confidence.
Our programs combine physical skills with social-emotional development, in a unique and synergistic combination. Young people recognize and develop their physical strength by practicing physical self- defense. Experiencing the power in their bodies gives them the confidence to use their voices, set boundaries, create healthy relationships, and develop into leaders. We enroll groups of 8-20 girls and gender expansive youth (ages 8-18, in age-appropriate groups) at no cost to them in their neighborhood schools and community centers. We aim for a 4:1 ratio, students to staff in each program.
Lead Teacher Role Description The Lead Teacher is the primary instructor in a Girls’ LEAP program, and serves as a Girls’ LEAP representative with our program sponsors and in the communities they serve. Lead Teachers collaborate with an intergenerational team comprised of college-aged Teaching Assistants and high school Teen Mentors to deliver Girls’ LEAP programming. Community programs are 60-90 minutes long and typically run weekly for 11 weeks during the fall and spring semesters and for 6 weeks during the summer. Lead Teachers also have opportunities to lead one-time introductory workshops with prospective program sponsors, participate in community outreach events, and work alongside Expert Trainers to lead weekend intensive trainings for new staff and volunteers. Girls’ LEAP provides intensive training for our entire curriculum. Previous self-defense or martial arts experience not required.
