Location: Channel Fish Processing, Braintree, MA
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of general maintenance and repair duties to ensure the safe, efficient, and sanitary operation of the facility in accordance with food safety and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards. This position supports the day-to-day maintenance of building systems, utilities, equipment, and structural components within a fast-paced food production environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on facility infrastructure, including plumbing, HVAC, lighting, doors, walls, flooring, ceilings, and building exteriors.
- Support sanitation and compliance by ensuring that building surfaces, drains, and critical infrastructure are maintained to food safety standards.
- Troubleshoot and repair facility equipment such as air handling units, compressors, dock doors, and water systems.
- Inspect and maintain building safety systems including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, and eye wash stations.
- Assist with the setup and repair of office and production spaces, including minor carpentry, painting, and drywall repair.
- Support compliance with GMP, HACCP, OSHA, and other regulatory standards relevant to food production and employee safety.
- Respond to urgent maintenance calls and facility issues during and outside of normal working hours as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and inspections completed.
- Work collaboratively with the production, QA, sanitation, and maintenance teams to minimize disruption and downtime.
Qualifications / Skills
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in general building maintenance
- Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems
- Ability to safely operate hand and power tools, ladders, lifts, and other maintenance equipment
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, blueprints, and equipment manuals
- Basic computer skills (e.g., email, maintenance log systems)
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in cold, hot, or wet environments as required
- Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
Preferred:
- Technical or trade school training
- Knowledge of GMP, food safety, and sanitation protocols
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and climbing ladders.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights as needed.
- Exposure to wet, cold, hot, or noisy environments typical of a food production facility.
- Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required.
Work Schedule
- Full-time
- Occasional weekend, holiday, and on-call work required
