Occupational Therapy Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY :
The Occupational Therapy Supervisor provides leadership and oversight for occupational therapy (OT) services within the inpatient behavioral health setting. This role encompasses clinical supervision, staff development, program development, and administrative responsibilities, including budgeting for group therapy, occupational therapy, and sensory supplies. The incumbent will also collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient care and support the implementation of sensory integration and modulation programs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Clinical and Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Provide direct clinical supervision and mentorship to occupational therapy staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with evidence-based practices.
- Review and approve individualized treatment plans, ensuring they incorporate occupational therapy goals and sensory integration techniques where appropriate.
- Conduct regular clinical rounds to provide guidance, support, and oversight to OT staff, ensuring treatment fidelity and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Act as a resource and consultant for complex patient cases, assisting with problem-solving and ensuring safe, therapeutic interventions.
- Develop and facilitate orientation programs and ongoing training for OT staff to enhance competencies and promote professional growth.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, including nursing, social work, psychology, and psychiatry, to integrate occupational therapy into overall patient care plans.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the facility’s sensory integration and modulation program, including the selection of equipment and design of therapeutic spaces.
- Develop protocols and best practices for sensory modulation interventions, ensuring they are aligned with trauma-informed care and behavioral health best practices.
- Introduce innovative occupational therapy and group therapy approaches to enhance patient engagement and outcomes.
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of OT interventions and programs, collecting and analyzing data to inform quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with clinical leadership to develop new therapeutic groups and interventions that meet the evolving needs of the patient population.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Develop, manage, and monitor the OT department’s annual budget, including allocations for group therapy materials, occupational therapy supplies, and sensory integration equipment.
- Oversee ordering, inventory, and maintenance of OT and sensory integration supplies, ensuring timely availability and cost-effective use of resources.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation standards (e.g., DMH, TJC), and facility policies and procedures.
- Participate in departmental and facility-wide meetings, committees, and workgroups to represent OT and contribute to organizational planning and development.
- Develop and implement systems for tracking and reporting key performance indicators (KPIs) related to OT services, including patient outcomes, staff productivity, and resource utilization.
- Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping practices are followed by all OT staff, aligning with regulatory and legal standards.
Staff Development and Education:
- Plan and coordinate staff development programs, including in-service education, workshops, and competency assessments for the OT team and interdisciplinary staff.
- Mentor and coach staff in evidence-based practices, professional development, and leadership skills.
- Identify training needs and opportunities to enhance the clinical skills and knowledge base of the OT team.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and high standards of care.
Other Duties:
- Serve as a liaison with vendors and suppliers to negotiate contracts and ensure cost-effective procurement of OT and sensory supplies.
- Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new OT staff.
- Lead efforts to promote staff engagement, well-being, and retention within the OT department.
- Assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation as needed, using trauma-informed and patient-centered approaches.
- Support the facility’s mission and strategic goals, including participation in performance improvement initiatives and accreditation readiness activities.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree (or higher) in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter “N/A”):
Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as an occupational therapist, with at least 2 years in a behavioral health or psychiatric setting preferred.
At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory or leadership role strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience in budget management and program development a plus.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED (If none, please enter “N/A”):
Current and unrestricted license to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Certification in Sensory Integration or related specialty preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
