Department Description
The Climate Action & Advocacy Department at Seaside Sustainability is dedicated to leading impactful environmental initiatives and advocating for legislative changes that protect our oceans, marine life, and ecosystems. The team focuses on developing and implementing climate adaptation and mitigation projects locally, nationally, and globally, using the latest climate science and international sustainability guidelines. The Climate Action & Advocacy Department is seeking an individual to fill the Volunteer Fellow (Remote) position.
Position Summary
As a Fellow at Seaside Sustainability, you will play a pivotal leadership role, overseeing all four sub‑teams within the department, and drive the successful execution of various projects and initiatives. You’ll guide, mentor, and support Department Managers and Interns while ensuring alignment with Seaside Sustainability’s mission and objectives. We are looking for a hardworking individual who’s passionate about developing forward‑thinking approaches to climate change. The ideal candidate will be organized and innovative and enjoy performing research, project development, and managing interns across four key sub‑teams.
Team Units
- The Climate Mitigation & Community Action team engages with local communities to promote climate awareness and action. This team supports the planning and execution of community‑based climate initiatives, working to empower individuals and groups to take meaningful action on climate change.
- The Action Network team focuses on developing communication strategies to raise awareness about environmental justice issues. This team creates engaging content for various platforms, including social media, newsletters, and press releases.
- The Nature‑Based Solutions team researches, plans, and executes natural climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. This team focuses on implementing nature‑based solutions in local communities, ensuring that these solutions are integrated with sustainable development practices.
- The Climate Change Newsletter team is responsible for researching, drafting, and publishing Seaside Sustainability’s monthly newsletter, C Change. This publication highlights new and relevant topics concerning fossil fuels, the renewable energy transition, climate change mitigation, and actionable steps individuals can take to contribute to climate action.
Climate Action & Advocacy Volunteer Fellow (Remote) Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Leadership & Oversight: Lead and support Department Managers across all sub‑teams, fostering clear communication, coordination, and collaboration within and between teams.
- Strategic Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and successful completion of projects across all sub‑teams, ensuring alignment with the organization’s goals and timelines.
- Mentorship & Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to Department Managers, promoting skill development and creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Reporting & Communication: Maintain regular communication with the department’s senior leadership, including Advisors, providing timely updates on project progress, challenges, and key achievements.
- Strategic Planning & Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments to develop strategies, set department‑wide goals, and identify opportunities for growth and innovation within all sub‑teams.
- Problem‑Solving & Decision‑Making: Address challenges that arise within sub‑teams, ensuring effective, timely solutions and fostering a positive, productive environment.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success, foster partnerships, and strengthen collaborative relationships.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience (e.g., business, environmental science, HR, marine science, sustainability, or related fields).
- Proven experience in a leadership or supervisory role with a strong track record in team management, project oversight, and impactful contributions.
- Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple projects across various sub‑teams.
- Excellent communication, motivational, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and project management tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote, dynamic environment.
- Proactive communication among team members and managers, with the initiative to introduce new tasks and projects and expand current procedures.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring that team members are consistently on‑task and submitting quality work.
Work Environment
- This is a remote internship position, and all interns work from their individual home offices across the globe.
- Interns must have access to a computer, tablet, or mobile device with an internet connection to perform duties, attend meetings, and communicate effectively.
- Interns are expected to commit at least fifteen hours per week and meet weekly deadlines set by their supervisors.
Duration and Compensation
- Duration: 5 months (flexible start and end dates).
- This is an unpaid position.
