Supply Chain Manager
MODERN MILKMAN · US
Role: Supply Chain Manager
Location: Boston, MA, in our office, with travel to hubs and suppliers (usually 10-20%)
Reports to: Director of Commercial and Supply Chain
Works with: Procurement, Category Managers, Hub Operations, Ops Tech, and our suppliers
Type: Full-time
Salary: $70,000-$80,000 per year
About us
Modern Milkman delivers high quality milk, eggs, baked goods, fresh meat, prepared foods, and grocery essentials from local farmers and independent producers, straight to the doorstep. All in glass bottles, all with less packaging and less food waste guilt!
Our US story started at Oakridge Dairy, a fifth-generation farm in Ellington, Connecticut. We now serve customers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Ohio, and we're just getting started.
About the role
Every bottle, loaf, and carton on a customer's doorstep starts with something arriving at one of our hubs. That's where you come in.
Join us in our milkround revival by helping us build the process behind every doorstep delivery. As Supply Chain Manager, you'll own purchasing and inbound supply chain end-to-end. You'll be the guardian of our inventory replenishment and supplier reliability, translating demand into accurate purchase orders, making sure those orders arrive on time, in full, and in quality, and owning the inbound performance picture that goes up to senior leadership.
The US business is early-stage. Supply chain here is being built from the ground up, with support from our VP of Operations and the directors in supply chain. You won't be slotting into someone else's playbook. You'll be writing it.
Nothing here is perfect. We're learning as we grow. Processes are half-built, tools are still being designed, and there's real room to improve almost everything you'll touch. If that sounds frustrating, this probably isn't the role for you. If it sounds exciting, because every fix has immediate, tangible impact, keep on reading.
What you'll do
Purchase orders and replenishment
- Run human-in-the-loop ordering: review the quantities our tools suggest, sanity-check them against real-world factors (seasonality, promotions, trends, growth, recent supplier issues), and issue POs that reflect reality
- Create, validate, and issue POs through our ordering systems. SKU counts, pricing, and delivery dates need to be right the first time
- Adjust orders quickly when stock levels or supplier availability change; catch out-of-stock and overstock scenarios before they happen
Supplier and hub coordination
- Track orders from issuance to delivery. You're the first line of defence against late deliveries, short shipments, and no-shows
- Be the day-to-day operational point of contact for suppliers; the person who picks up the phone when something's gone wrong
- Be the first call from hub teams when a truck is late or an order is short. Troubleshoot in real time so van loading isn't affected
- Onboard new suppliers and maintain SOPs covering receiving, returns, quality checks, and exceptions
- Plan and coordinate stock transfers from our distribution centre to the hubs, and between hubs when we need to rebalance
Inbound performance reporting
- Own the inbound reporting that goes to senior leadership. Headline metrics include supplier OTIFIQ, waste, donations in dollars, and inbound freight as a percentage of revenue
- Make the numbers tell a story. Senior leaders should walk away knowing what's working, what isn't, and what we're doing about it
- Build out the wider performance picture: van fill, OOS, shrinkage, stock turnover. Spot patterns and flag them early
Process improvement
- Run root cause analysis on supplier failures and data inaccuracies; propose improvements to our internal ordering logic and ways of working
- Find the broken bits, the manual workarounds, the places we're losing time or money, and fix them. Treat process improvement as core to the job, not a side project
- Be a key stakeholder for Ops Tech and help lead development of our MRP, ordering, and inventory tools, from sketching the workflow to specifying the build
- Use AI to make these tools smarter and faster. We don't expect you to be an expert, but we do expect curiosity and a willingness to experiment
Who we're looking for
This is a great role for someone savvy, numerical, and ready to roll their sleeves up. You don't need supply chain experience. You do need to be the kind of person who finds deep satisfaction when a spreadsheet finally balances.
You'll thrive here if you:
- Spot when a number looks wrong, investigate it, and flag it before the order is sent. You don't follow tools blindly
- Take pride in clean delivery schedules and zero-error POs; the details matter to you
- See what needs doing and start moving. You don't wait for perfect information
- See a half-baked process and want to fix it, not complain about it
- Keep chasing. Suppliers go quiet, deliveries go missing, paperwork goes astray. You follow up until it's sorted
- Are warm and direct. People should want to pick up when you call
You'll likely have:
- Zero to two years of work experience. This could be your first proper role out of school
- A degree in something quantitative, analytical, or operational, or a self-taught equivalent you can show us
- Strong Google Sheets skills: pivot tables, lookups, basic formulas. Nothing should faze you
- Bonus points for SQL exposure, ERP familiarity, experience using AI in building things, or operational experience in warehouse, retail, or food service
Where you'll grow
You'll join us early in your career. Within a year or two, here's what good looks like:
- Delivery - you take loosely-defined problems, scope them, and deliver end-to-end. You own processes and the metrics that go with them
- Scope - you're delivering against your KPIs and have become the person colleagues come to when they need help in your area
- Culture - you consistently demonstrate our values through your actions and bring the people around you along with you
Our values
We're Brave , taking bold, calculated risks and treating every failure as a learning opportunity. We're Curious , questioning how things have always been done and experimenting to find better ways. We're Together , supporting each other, collaborating across teams, and working toward shared goals. And we're Real : driven and determined, but always human, empathetic, straight-talking, and never too serious to have a laugh.
If that resonates, you'll feel right at home.
Why join us
We're a scrappy startup with finite resources, and that shapes how we hire. We bring in talented people early, give them a long leash, and let them learn fast.
The hubs you'll support are real places with real people. The suppliers you'll speak to are small businesses, independent farmers and producers who care about what they make. The fixes you land in your first few months will still be paying off years from now.
How to apply:
Send us your resume with:
- A short note about why this role caught your eye.
- An example of a time you spotted something everyone else had missed, or a process you have implemented or you found a way to improve.
We'd love to hear this from you rather than read a generic cover letter.
Interview Process:
Hiring Manager Interview 45mins > Technical interview 1 hour > Ways of working 1 hour
Candidate Experience ⭐️
Due to the high volume of applications, it might take us a little longer to get back to you. Most feedback will be shared via email, and we make every effort to provide specific and constructive insights whenever possible
We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. We believe that our team is stronger with a variety of perspectives.
Please note: We do not offer sponsorship for relocation costs
