It is the responsibility of a UMass Memorial Police Officer to enforce the policies of the medical center and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The police officer will conduct foot and vehicle patrols, perform traffic duties, conduct investigations, promote crime prevention and assist with community service. The officer will make lawful arrests in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and provide court testimony when necessary.Hiring Range:
$20.86 - $37.54

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs a variety of duties involving safety, security, and related activities.
2. Patrols properties owned, leased and occupied by UMass Memorial Health Care ensuring the protection of persons and property, being observant for criminal activity, or anything which might endanger life, health, and safety or result in theft or damage to property and reports same for the appropriate action to be taken.
3. Creates and maintains a sense of safety and security on all UMass Memorial Healthcare properties enhancing public interest of law enforcement and for the Medical Center by constant example of courteous and ethical service.
4. Conducts investigations as directed. Submits professional and accurate reports. Makes lawful arrests in accordance with MA General Law Chap. 22c Sec. 63 and provides testimony court as necessary.
5. Ensure that all prisoners in their care and custody are safely transported and processed in accordance with Departmental Policies/Procedures.
6. Secures and properly records all evidence or other property coming into their custody.
7. Performs traffic directing duties as necessary. Controls traffic flow in various entrances and exits to parking lots. Ensures driveways and emergency entrances are kept clear. Assists with traffic during snow removal operation. Ensures that emergency vehicle lanes are kept clear at all times.
8. Reports punctually to all assignments and responds immediately to all emergencies.
9. Greets patients, visitors and others in a courteous manner and assists those seeking directions.
10. Reports questionable conditions, incidents, and discrepancies to supervisor or others. Maintains radio communication at all times.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

UMass Memorial Police Department considers both entry level and academy trained officers.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Equivalent to high school education plus addition specialized courses.
2. Entry level candidates will be required to attend a full-time police academy authorized by the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee.
3. Academy trained and entry level officers must be able to obtain certification as a law enforcement officer by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) and through the Massachusetts State Police (SSPO)
4. First Responder, Driver’s License, OCAT and in-service classes required.
5. Class A license to carry firearms in Massachusetts required.
6. CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire/transfer into this job as a condition of employment.
7. Officers must successfully complete the annual firearms training.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Must have good communication skills and be able to deal with the general public.
2. Must also be able to work under sometimes-stressful conditions and maintain a calm composure.
Preferred:
1. Three (3) years of prior law enforcement experience preferred.
2. POST certified, academy trained officers.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Ability to mobilize quickly and efficiently. Position requires walking and standing for long periods in all weather conditions. May be exposed to bodily fluids and environmental hazards. See attached grid for guidelines of specific requirements.
