Overview

The Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (DCNO) serves as a direct support to the Chief Nursing Officer, playing a pivotal role in promoting high-quality, patient-centered care through executive-level management of resources, strategic planning, and program development of Nursing and Patient Care Services (NPCS). Reporting directly to the CNO, this position is integral to advancing Dana-Farber's mission to provide exceptional cancer care and improve patient outcomes. The DCNO collaborates with the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and DFCI interdisciplinary leadership teams to develop innovative clinical programs and initiatives, sharing accountability for the institution’s quality patient care and outcomes, financial performance, staff and patient engagement, and fosters a healthy workforce and work environment. The DCNO has the skills and abilities to represent the CNO in various forums as needed, and a thorough understanding of the Institute, its strategic plan and operating goals.

The DCNO drives adherence to standards of professional practice and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance, and fostering a culture of evidence-based practice and clinical research.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Provide leadership to the NPCS leadership team, supporting them to achieve quality outcomes and departmental goals.
  • Develop communication vehicles across departments and leads teams toward the achievement of the vision and strategic plan of the Department and Patient Care Services.
  • Collaborates with the Deputy Chief Medical officer on interdisciplinary efforts in planning, integrating, implementing and evaluating clinical programs and services across the Institute and in collaboration with others.

Quality of Care:

  • Leads the development of standards for professional practice and nursing programs to facilitate high-quality patient care and safety. Collaborates with leadership to improve the patient experience and clinical outcomes.

Collaborative Relationships:

  • Builds inter-professional relationships internal and external to DFCI to enhance patient care outcomes and coordinates care across the continuum.

Financial Planning and Management:

  • Collaborates on financial plans for new and existing programs, manages budgets, and allocates resources to achieve productivity and service goals.

Personnel Management:

  • Leads recruitment, retention and professional development of key leadership positions, manages performance standards, and fosters a supportive environment for excellent performance, including working closely with MNA representatives to ensure adherence to collective bargaining agreements.

Professional Education/Development:

  • Mentors staff in developing skills for high quality executive leadership in patient care and ensures regulatory compliance across the continuum.

Strategic Planning:

  • Utilizes management information for strategic planning and collaborates across disciplines on designing data-driven improvements.

Evidence-Informed Practice/Research:

  • Supports and participates in clinical research programs, utilizing findings to develop practice standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Work occurs throughout the institution, requiring frequent visits to patient care units and occasional visits to community sites.
  • External involvement in professional nursing societies, cancer related interdisciplinary organizations, service on boards or committees at the local regional or national level is expected

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervision of various senior level NPCS leaders and other personnel.
  • Supervises staff. Hires, develops, and manages staff to achieve organizational goals. Sets clear expectations, delivers feedback, and monitors performance for quality, efficiency, and compliance with policies and procedures. Mentors staff, fosters career growth, and cultivates a positive and productive work environment.

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral degree (DNP or PhD in nursing) required: Phd preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of nursing experience in oncology.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing administration experience in an academic medical center.

License/Certification/Registration Required

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current board certification required in a clinical or executive leadership specialty.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated leadership in designing delivery systems for individualized patient care across the lifespan in a tertiary environment.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across institutions, disciplines and programs to support quality patient care
  • Familiarity with models of professional nursing practice and management of personnel and fiscal resources.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, evaluation, and long-range planning involving complex decision-making.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong collaborative skills in interdisciplinary leadership teams
