Job Summary:
Client is a leading chemical process engineering and construction company with a long history of executing customized design/build projects. We support innovative sectors of economy and have a niche market position helping to scale new technologies.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Instrument Engineer to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in instrumentation and control systems across various industries, including life sciences, chemical manufacturing, and environmental remediation. This role will be responsible for the design, specification, procurement, and implementation of instrumentation systems throughout all project phases—from conceptual design to commissioning.
The Instrument Engineer will work closely with fellow team members and support project execution by
coordinating with clients, internal engineering team, internal resources, external vendors, and contractors in a fast-moving environment. This is a great opportunity to work closely with a team of talented, high-caliber engineers helping to bring new technology to market.
We need an engineer with hands on experience who is able to effectively manage their time and
complete tasks on their own. The successful candidate should be comfortable with shifting priorities and
comfortable with challenging deadlines, as well as managing the activities of several concurrent projects.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and maintain key project documents, including:
- Instrument Location Plans
- I/O Lists - Maintain and Develop Existing Equipment Database
- Control Panel Layouts and Schematics
- Loop Diagrams
• Create and manage equipment and instrumentation datasheets, specifications, and bid packages.
• Specify and select suitable instrumentation for a wide variety of chemical applications. Selection includes installation details like orientation and materials of construction.
• Support procurement processes through vendor selection and technical bid evaluations.
• Participate in the design and execution of automated systems and control strategies.
• Commission instrumentation systems onsite, ensuring compliance with hazardous area classifications (e.g., intrinsically safe, explosion-proof, etc.).
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mechanical, process, and automation systems.
• Solid written, organization and communication skills.
• Troubleshoot traditional analog and discrete signals as well as other communication types (HART, Profibus, DeviceNet, AS-I, Ethernet I/P, Modbus).
• Troubleshoot and perform service work for malfunctioning control systems and instruments.
• Use a multimeter to support control loop testing and/or troubleshooting of wiring and connectivity issues.
• Regional travel to client facilities during project commissioning phase.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, electrical or computer engineering.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience in Instrumentation and Controls Engineering.
• Demonstrated experience in hazardous area classification and UL-508A industrial control panel standards.
• Understanding of DCS/PLC physical layer and control hardware.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Products. (Excel, Word, Access, Project)
• Experience with Procore construction management software and BlueBeam PDF software are preferred.
• Ability to read, scrape for information, and interpret Process and Instrumentation Diagrams. (P&IDs)
• Ability to read, understand Network Architecture Drawings.
• Familiarity with SocketWorx smart PIDs.
• The ability to deal with challenges thrown up by complex engineering projects and have the people and time management skills to overcome them.
• The ability to understand the concepts and state-of-the-art technology on a range of manufacturing techniques employed by manufacturing engineering clients across a number of sectors from Batteries to Life Sciences.
