Job Summary

The Power Dispatcher will coordinate, control, and document the activities of the MBTA power system, ensuring that adequate power is available to meet the Authority's needs and alerting the appropriate personnel in the event of power problems.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control the operation of the gas turbine/generator complex.
  • Oversee the A.C. power transmission network and the entire substation system to ensure that all equipment is available to supply D.C. power for operating Rapid Transit and Surface Lines operations.
  • Maintain all maps and plans in use on the power system, updating and making changes when necessary to keep plans current.
  • Communicate closely with Rapid Transit and Surface Line Dispatchers to keep them updated on all power system changes.
  • Supervise the safe and orderly removal, replacement, and repair of all cables and equipment pertinent to the operation of the power system.
  • Coordinate all requests for power off and power on and associated switching.
  • Coordinate and direct personnel to the source of power problems with methods for correction.
  • Ensure all power related reports are current and forwarded to authorized personnel.
  • Respond courteously and professionally to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or coworker.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with Employees.
  • Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and policies of the Authority, including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination, Antiharassment, and Anti-Retaliation policies, including the use of proper PPE.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • A High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution
  • Two (2) years of experience in electric utility dispatching of high and medium voltage substation operations and power transmission and distribution systems
  • Effective organizational, analytical, multitasking, time management, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Have the ability to think and act quickly to resolve revenue service issues while ensuring the safety of employees and customers at all times.
  • The ability to use Word, Excel, or Database applications.
  • Have excellent customer service, conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • The ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed. Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week. The ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Preferred Experience And Skills

  • Related supervisory experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Six (6) years of experience with substation operations and maintenance, or equivalent experience in medium voltage systems as a line worker or an electrician

Job Conditions:

  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).
  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.

  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if current student or recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection).
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding, working in their positions, and throughout the duration of their program.
