Project Engineer

Mantis Innovation
Boston, MA

Job Description

Job Description

Mantis Innovation provides managed facility services and turnkey program management with technology-enabled solutions that target the entire building footprint. We look at the entire facility—inside and out—and can impact 70% of what a building operator allocates critical budget dollars toward, including: Strategic electricity and natural gas procurement, renewable energy, and demand response; climate impact reduction and reporting, net zero strategies, and sustainability planning; roofing, solar, HVAC assessment management, pavement, building envelope, data center optimization, and EV charging; lighting/LED retrofits, HVAC/mechanical systems, and BMS/BAS improvements and implementation.

The Project Engineer helps plan and deliver energy efficiency, utility, and infrastructure improvement projects for clients. This role gathers technical information, evaluates opportunities, and helps develop project scopes, budgets, and implementation plans. The position supports engineering design, construction activities, and project coordination under the direction of a Professional Engineer. By providing technical and project support, this role helps ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and successfully.

OUTCOMES & SCORECARD FOR SUCCESS

  1. Complete 95% or more of assigned site surveys, data collection activities, engineering analyses, and technical deliverables by agreed deadlines, with less than 5% requiring significant rework due to errors or omissions.
  2. Maintain assigned project schedules, budgets, procurement logs, action-item trackers, and project documentation with 98% accuracy, and provide status updates within one business day of requested reporting deadlines.
  3. Demonstrate a positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and reliable availability by maintaining strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams, responding promptly to communications, and consistently following through on commitments.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct site surveys and collect technical, utility, operational, and cost data to support project development and engineering analysis.
  2. Perform engineering evaluations of energy, water, utility, and infrastructure systems to identify improvement opportunities.
  3. Prepare feasibility studies, technical assessments, and supporting documentation for sustainability, utility modernization, and energy efficiency projects.
  4. Develop project scopes, savings calculations, cost estimates, and technical inputs for proposals and implementation plans.
  5. Prepare engineering deliverables and design documentation under the direction of a licensed Professional Engineer
  6. Manage assigned project schedules, budgets, procurement activities, equipment tracking, and construction-related tasks.
  7. Monitor project progress, costs, subcontractor performance, and implementation milestones, and communicate status, risks, and issues to project leaders.
  8. Coordinate clients, internal teams, subcontractors, and external partners to execute projects, maintain schedules, and achieve project objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical field
  • 1-5 years of experience supporting engineering, construction, energy, utility, infrastructure, or related technical projects
  • Ability to support engineering analysis, project documentation, scheduling, cost tracking, and coordination activities

Field assignments may occur at industrial facilities, commercial buildings, utility plants, central energy plants, mechanical rooms, construction sites, manufacturing environments, rooftops, and other operational facilities. Work environments may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, temperature extremes, elevated noise levels, dust, vibration, moving machinery, energized equipment, and active construction or production activities.
  • Physical requirements: The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer, including frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, and telephone. Field work requires the ability to travel to client locations and move through facilities to conduct surveys, inspections, assessments, and project meetings. Employees may be required to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, traverse uneven surfaces, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and enter mechanical or equipment areas. The position may occasionally require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
