Ophthalmologist / Cataract Surgeon – Job Description

Position summary

The Ophthalmologist / Cataract Surgeon is responsible for the medical and surgical management of eye diseases, with a focus on high‑volume cataract surgery, within a multi‑specialty eye care group. The physician works closely with optometrists and other clinicians to deliver advanced, patient‑centered care across a diverse population.

Key responsibilities

•     Provide comprehensive medical ophthalmology care, including diagnosis and treatment of ocular and systemic diseases affecting the eye.

•     Perform cataract surgery (including complex cases as appropriate), using modern phacoemulsification techniques and premium IOLs as available.

•     Perform additional office‑based and surgical procedures appropriate to subspecialty training (e.g., glaucoma lasers, intravitreal injections, anterior segment procedures).

•     Interpret diagnostic imaging and testing (OCT, topography, biometry, visual fields, fundus photography) and integrate findings into surgical planning.

•     Collaborate with optometrists and other clinicians to co‑manage pre‑ and post‑operative cataract care and other complex medical/surgical cases.

•     Participate in call coverage and provide urgent/emergent ophthalmic care as needed.

•     Educate staff, and where applicable residents or students, on ophthalmic conditions, cataract surgery indications, and postoperative care.

•     Contribute to quality improvement, clinical protocols, and practice growth, including optimization of cataract surgery pathways and outcomes.

Qualifications

•     MD or DO degree with completion of an ACGME‑accredited ophthalmology residency.

•     Fellowship training in cataract/anterior segment (preferred but not required, depending on practice needs).

•     Board certified or board eligible in Ophthalmology.

•     Current or eligible medical licensure in Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

•     Demonstrated proficiency in cataract surgery, strong clinical and diagnostic skills, and excellent communication with patients and staff.
