HIT Consultant - Contract
Duration: 4 6 weeks (with potential for extension)
Location: Hybrid (On-site at client's Boston Hospital with remote flexibility) Overview: Seeking an experienced external consultant to evaluate and restructure Information Technology (IT) Department. The IT Department supports a broad range of clinical, research, and administrative functions through a dedicated IT team comprising approximately 40 full-time employees. Historically, this group has built and maintained a suite of custom applications to support clinical workflows, research data infrastructure, and performance improvement efforts. With the institution-wide transition from Cerner to Epic and the growing need to support AI, analytics, and data science initiatives, we are undertaking a strategic restructuring of this IT team. This engagement will require a combination of on-site and virtual presence, with close collaboration with leadership, the institutional IT team, and key clinical and research stakeholders. Scope of Work: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current IT team, including organizational structure, roles and responsibilities, workflows, technical skill sets, and alignment with institutional priorities. Map existing capabilities against the future vision, including Epic optimization, data science, AI, clinical analytics, and population health tools Evaluate existing custom applications and legacy platforms, identifying which can be retired, transitioned, or integrated into Epic's native capabilities. Engage key stakeholders across department, operations, research, quality, and finance to understand current pain points and future needs Evaluate current project governance, technical leadership, staffing model, and resource allocation Develop a new organizational structure and staffing strategy aligned with future priorities Recommend workforce development strategies, including reskilling or repurposing current team members. Define future-state staffing needs and propose a revised organizational structure that supports data science, analytics, automation, Epic optimization, and AI initiatives. Identify any structural, cultural, or operational barriers that may limit performance or responsiveness of the IT team. Outline an implementation roadmap, including sequencing, change management, and metrics for success Qualifications: Demonstrated expertise in healthcare IT organizational design and EMR transitions, with Epic implementations in academic medical centers or large health systems. Deep familiarity with Epic environments and their intersection with custom application development Experience advising on workforce transformation involving analytics, AI, or data strategy. Deep understanding of the intersection of clinical care, research, and technology in pediatric or specialty care settings is strongly preferred. Proven track record in conducting organizational assessments with actionable recommendations and execution support. Experience with AI/ML, health analytics, and data science strategy in clinical or operational settings Ability to assess talent, workflows, and organizational design with a balanced, data-driven approach Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage clinicians, administrators, and technical teams Deliverables: Current state assessment summary Gap analysis between current capabilities and future needs Proposed organizational chart and role definitions Recommendations on talent development and recruitment Implementation roadmap with key milestones and success metrics
