Facilities and Grounds Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

St. John's Episcopal Church is an engaged and historic parish in Gloucester, serving all of Cape Ann. We seek a dedicated and detail-oriented employee to care for the buildings and grounds, overseeing their cleanliness, maintenance, and general upkeep. This position ensures that our worship space and facilities remain welcoming, safe, and in good working order for our congregation and visitors so that the parish can fulfill its mission of serving God and our neighbors. The Facilities and Grounds Manager (Sexton) reports to the Priest in Collaboration and collaborates with church staff and volunteers to support the mission of St. John’s.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilities and Space Use

• Oversee and perform the general maintenance and cleanliness of the premises, including sanctuary, offices, stairway, parish hall rooms, bathrooms, and kitchen.
• Perform routine inspections of facilities to identify maintenance needs or safety hazards including necessary annual carpet cleaning or floor polishing, light shoveling and salting paths during snow events*.
• Act as the liaison for external groups using the facilities, ensuring compliance with church building use policies.
• Assist with landscaping and groundskeeping tasks as needed to maintain the exterior appearance of the property including walking the grounds and picking up trash and debris.
• Manage waste disposal and recycling efforts in accordance with environmental guidelines.
• Respond promptly during regular work hours to any requests for cleaning or maintenance from staff or visitors.
• Work with the parish Buildings and Grounds Committee to monitor facilities and grounds for maintenance and repair, and coordinate with vendors for needed cleaning, repairs and renovations.
• Coordinate facility use including parish events, room reservations and parking lot communication with our parking attendant.

*Carpet cleaning, floor polishing and Snow Removal will be contracted out to vendors.

Preparation for Worship Services and Sunday Coffee Hour

• Open the church (doors/lights/heat) for weekly Sunday and special services. Ensure the entrances are tidy and welcoming.

Assure cream, coffee, tea and sugar are stocked and labelled for Sunday.

• On Sunday mornings, set up coffee and coffee supplies to welcome the coffee hour team for the day.

Supply & Inventory Management

• Monitor and order cleaning supplies, including carpet cleaners, bathroom cleaning agents, toilet paper, paper towels and snow melt.
• Ensure necessary maintenance supplies are stocked and available.
• Track and order tea and coffee supplies for recovery and ministry groups and Sunday coffee hour

QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous experience in facilities maintenance or a similar role is preferred.
• Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, and standing for extended periods.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and some evenings.
• Familiarity and/ interest in church settings and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
• Computer skills are a plus.

WORK SCHEDULE

• Three weekdays (specific days and times to be determined in consultation with the priest) - 12 to 15 hours.
• Sunday mornings and afternoons - 3 hours

Compensation & Benefits:

• Pay: $20 per hour
• Vacation: 2 weeks paid per year (pro-rated)
