Respiratory Therapist
Overview
Dana-Farber is currently seeking a Respiratory Therapist to join their team. This role involves evaluating, delivering, and monitoring the cardiopulmonary needs of both pediatric and adult patients in accordance with established policies and procedures. Upon hire, the Respiratory Therapist will review departmental guidelines and undergo orientation to ensure they are equipped to work independently in assessing, coordinating, and delivering care tailored to each patient’s needs. Responsibilities include diagnostic testing, outpatient care, patient education, facilitating continuinare in home settings, and contributing to staff education. The Respiratory Therapist will provide care that respects the age, cultural, and religious diversity of each patient. This position is per diem. Some on-call and some weekend coverage required.

Responsibilities
- Provides a variety of Respiratory Care Services to Dana Farber Cancer Institute main campus (Boston) and Chestnut Hill campus
- Applies scientific principles for the identification, prevention, and remediation of pulmonary and cardiopulmonary dysfunction
- Provides and coordinates the delivery of medical gases
- Administers aerosolized medications
- Works with a multidisciplinary team to maintain natural and artificial airways
- Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of a multidisciplinary code team
- Performs pulmonary function testing (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, MIPS/MEPS, pre/post bronchodilator testing)
- Performs exercise oximetry testing
- Provides education of respiratory care procedures and respiratory related issues to patients and families
- Provides consultation services and teaching of respiratory related issues to other providers as needed
- Performs routine maintenance, daily calibration, and quality control procedures on complex pulmonary function testing equipment
- Completes documentation of all necessary information related to patient care, treatments administered, and responses to treatment in the electronic medical record
- Maintains appropriate department records (competencies, certifications etc.)
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of the Respiratory Care Department
Special Working Conditions:
- Works in patient care environments
- May be required to stand immobile for long periods of time
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases
- Frequent Exposure to secretions/excretions, unpleasant odors
- Frequent exposure to aeorsolized medications
- Works a variety of shift to include all hours when patients are in the Institute. Generally, working hours include day/evening variable (including weekends)
- Works any holiday for which the Institute is openend for patient care.
- Holiday and weekend staffing rotation is determined by the Respiratory Coordinator
- Holiday and weekend on-call rotation is determined by the Respiratory Coordinator
- All scheulding is the responsibility of the Respiratory Coordinator
- Work my require prolonged walking, standing, and occasional running.
- Work may include transport of heavey equipment and gas cylinders.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Current license by the MA Board of Respiratory Care
- RRT - Registration by the N.B.R.C.
- ACLS course completion (Required during 1st 3-6 months of orientation)
- Highly desirable:
- A.S. / B.S. in Respiratory Care
- CPFT / RPFT - Certification / Registration by the N.B.R.C
- Must possess analytical abilities and sound judgment for interpretation of complex data, formulation of appropriate treatment plan, implementation of plan, and documentation of pertinent patient information.
- Must demonstrate good interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel under stressful situations. Must be able to interact with critically ill patients and families to elicit desired responses to treatment and tests, and to defer apprehensions.
- Work requires prolonged walking, standing, and occasional running. Lifts and positions patients from time to time. Transfers heavy equipment and gas cylinders to and from patient care areas.
- Must have good mechanical aptitude to understand and operate highly complex equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated analytical abilities and sound judgment for the interpretation of data, formulation of appropriate treatment plans, communication and implementation of treatment plans, and documentation of pertinent patient information.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, communication skills, and proper temperament to interact with other providers, a multidisciplinary team, and critically ill patients under sometimes stressful circumstances.
- Fully competent in all aspects of their job description; Successfully completed the Respiratory Care Department competencies and the designated probationary period.
- Demonstrated mastery of most clinical skills and ability to focus on improving other skills as necessary; skills include assessment skills and the active assessment of respiratory therapies needed and procedures according to the respiratory protocols.
