Invasive Species Management and Restoration Specialist
Offshoots, Inc. is dedicated to pushing the horticultural industry forward in a way that supports pollinators, restores wildlife habitat and integrates ecological and horticultural excellence.
We are currently seeking an Invasive Species and Eco Restoration Specialist to implement Invasive Species management plans, native plant restorations and green infrastructure work in public, private and residential projects. The Eco restoration specialist should have a horticultural background and 2-4 years of experience identifying and managing invasive species. They should be confident in identification of invasive species, management techniques and able to perform strenuous labor outdoors in wild conditions. They will work closely with our Director of Ecological services to execute complex restoration projects and educate/work alongside our team of dedicated horticulturalists in the implementation of our work.
Offshoots, Inc. is committed to the planning, implementation, and maintenance of a wide range of ecological restoration projects in greater Boston. This includes invasive plant management, residential native plant gardens, meadows, wetland remediation and others. Projects are in all phases of development; from Ecological planning, restoration, installation, maintenance and monitoring.
Responsibilities:
- Invasive plant management, including removal of invasive vegetation utilizing manual, mechanical and chemical applications. Species range from Oriental Bittersweet to Japanese Knotweed, Black Swallowort, and Glossy Buckthorn.
- Native plant restoration techniques, including planting trees, shrubs, perennials; sowing seed; and, installing living shoreline
- Work in varied environments across weather conditions. Work around potential site hazards including poison ivy, ticks, and other natural area hazards
- Use of varied hand tools, chainsaws, string/hedge trimmers, dingo, augers and brush mowers
- Document daily field activities and write Field Notes to clients
Qualifications:
- 2-4 years working in Invasive Species Management and Ecological Restoration
- Knowledge of New England native plant communities and invasive plant species
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites in personal vehicle with Offshoots, Inc. provided tools, equipment, and uniforms
- MA Pesticide Applicators License is strongly preferred. MA Certified Invasive Species Specialist or Certified MA Horticulturalist is preferred.
- Ability to collaboratively organize and prioritize scopes of work along with other horticulturalists on team.
- Passion for plants and working outdoors with strong horticultural skills
- Ability to lift 30+ pounds and work on your feet outdoors for 8 hours
About the Position and Benefits:
The Invasive Species and Eco Restoration Lead is a seasonal full-time position (typically March - December). Offshoots offers 1 week paid vacation (taken in July) (2) days of earned sick leave and four (5) paid holidays. Team member will occasionally engage in prevailing wage work.
Locations(s):
Main office in Charlestown, MA. Project locations are around greater Boston, with occasional trips to Cape Cod and Western Massachusetts
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $30 - $35.00 per hour depending on experience
Expected hours: 40 per week (Mon-Fri) from 6 am -3 pm.
