Junior mechanic
The Town of Stow Department of Public Works is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time, 40 hours per week, to join our team as a Junior Mechanic.
As part of a small, collaborative crew, you’ll work on a variety of public works vehicles and equipment—from trucks and plows to small engines and electrical systems—ensuring they’re safe, reliable, and ready for action. This position offers the chance to work independently while being part of a team that values craftsmanship, safety, and service to the community.
Key Functions:
· Perform mechanical and electrical repairs, tune-ups, and overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines
· Diagnose issues using modern diagnostic and electronic systems
· Weld, fabricate, and modify parts as needed
· Keep detailed maintenance records and support fleet operations
· Respond to emergencies and assist with snow and ice removal during winter storms
· Collaborate with the Fleet Mechanic and DPW team to provide excellent service to all Town departments
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent, with at least two years of training or experience in automotive or equipment maintenance
· Strong mechanical skills and knowledge of tools, safety procedures, and repair techniques
· Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing conditions
· A valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license
· Willingness to work overtime, especially during weather or public safety events

This is a union position under the Teamsters. Starting rate $24.28/hour with excellent benefits that include health, dental, life, vision, thirteen paid holidays, twelve paid vacation days, stipends for licenses/endorsements, boot and clothing allowances, and is retirement/pension eligible.
