ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP’s extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The DHSP Summer Food Program provides free, nutritious meals to Cambridge children aged 18 and under, every weekday at Cambridge parks across the city during the summer months. The program also partners with Cambridge Book Bike and Cambridge Recreation to offer enrichment and activities throughout the summer. Reporting to the Recreation Activities Coordinator, the Summer Food Parks Manager will be responsible for the accurate ordering, distribution, and record keeping of daily meals for their site to ensure all Summer Food Program requirements are met and the Program is successful. Selected candidates will receive training and orientation related to the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensures that site personnel maintain accurate records and that the program operates in accordance with Federal and State requirements pertaining to the Summer Food Service Program Regulations.
  • Plan and implement professional development workshops on subjects including resume writing, interviewing, post-secondary preparation, physical fitness, and team building.
  • Serve as a role model to program participants and staff.
  • Supervise group of teens (10) assigned to various site locations and provide support where needed
  • Provide planning support and on-site assistance during summer enrichment events.
  • Hold weekly team meetings with staff under their supervision. Address performance issues with staff under their supervision through a corrective action process.
  • Prepare and submit weekly time sheets for staff that they supervise.
  • In the event the weather renders a site change necessary, the Parks Manager is responsible for the coordination with alternate sites (including but not limited to set up, communication and other logistics). Transport lunches to alternate sites when necessary.
  • Maintain equipment used in the delivery of programming.
  • Promote Recreation Division events through flyers, social media, and various other forms of networking.
  • Provide on-going site training, as needed, for sites receiving meal service.
  • Assist in the daily and weekly collection and collation of all forms and reports required from all operating food sites. Assist in the review of paperwork for accuracy before submission.
  • Review site paperwork for accuracy before submission to Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) to ensure compliance with program rules and regulations.
  • Serve on-site meals at the predetermined time determined by the Summer Food Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Well-organized self-starter capable of understanding complicated federal rules and regulations.
  • Familiar with computers and basic office machinery.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Must be able to take direction, be flexible and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in summer food programs or similar.
  • Familiarity with Cambridge neighborhoods
  • Knowledge of the Summer Food Service Program rules and regulations from the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Experience working in a busy, high-volume office setting
  • Experience with federal regulations and food safety
  • Valid Driver’s License

CORI REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is subject to Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) checks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS:

  • Busy office environment, open space and fluorescent lighting. Typical school classrooms, cafeterias and open parks during summer.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Answer telephones and maintain multiple files.
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and sit for an hour at a time.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to travel back and forth to food sites throughout Cambridge during summer.
