Pharmacist, Outpatient Department
Overview
The Outpatient Pharmacist II is responsible for the preparation, compounding and dispensing of medications according to the laws, policies and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy. The Pharmacists are responsible for the optimization of drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug-related problems and adverse drug events.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Appropriately dispenses pharmaceuticals, including non-sterile compounds, chemotherapy, biologics, controlled substances, and specialty medications for adult and pediatric patients.
2. Performs quality checks on prescription orders entered by pharmacy technicians; assists technicians with data entry of prescriptions for complex orders.
3. Provides direction to pharmacy technicians to promote operational efficiency (i.e., tech station assignment) and quality of the workflow.
4. Consults with patients regarding medication questions/concerns and instructions as needed.
5. Reviews and evaluates all physicians’ medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing; consults with physicians and nurses to clarify orders as needed.
6. Reviews prescribed drug therapy for contraindications, including but not limited to drug-drug interaction; drug-nutrient interaction; drug-herb interaction; allergies; and the appropriateness of drug and dose.
7. Documents and reports clinical interventions in the safety system; detects and reports adverse drug reactions accurately, in a timely manner and per policy.
8. Assists the pharmacy manager with the onboarding and training of new pharmacy technicians.
9. Other duties and projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Full proficiency in compounding of non-sterile products.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Ability to effectively work and provide leadership within a collaborative team-focused environment.
• Ability to prioritize and adapt to changes; accepts additional responsibilities based on the changing needs of the work setting.
• Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills (ability to analyze information objectively and make a reasoned judgement).
• Ability to resolve more complex problems within their scope of practice and to escalate appropriately when needed.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy. 2 years of retail, outpatient pharmacy and/or specialty pharmacy experience is required. Oncology experience preferred.
License/Certification/Registration Required:
Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Special Working Conditions:
Routine, direct exposure to chemotherapeutic agents, biologic agents, investigational agents, gene therapy, potentially dangerous and flammable chemicals. Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for exposure to infectious patients and/or materials. Rotating shifts required (not open weekends/evenings).

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
