Lifeguard - Full Time, Part Time or Per Diem

Center School invites applicants for the position of Lifeguard, Full Time, Part Time or Per Diem. The Lifeguard is responsible for the operation and overall safety of the swimming pool at Center School, 1913 Northampton Street, Holyoke.The successful applicant will have current Lifeguard Certification and current First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Applicants must have a minimum of a High School Diploma/GED. Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

Certified Pool Operator (CPO) preferred. Hours of position will vary but will generally be Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with flexibility in scheduling a possibility. For a full time position, the job duties would include assisting with students on the floor as an Interventionist as assigned.Responsibilities include: Supervision of the pool during class time, including working with all students in and out of the water by maintaining a constant watch for accidents and potential accidents and hazards in all water areas.Assists persons in distress by applying lifeguarding techniques and performing water rescues, applies first aid and CPR as required.Works collaboratively with staff to safeguard the pool to ensure proper use of the pool area.Performs cleaning duties relative to operation, including vacuuming the pools and maintaining a clean pool deck.

Works with the CPO to assure pool water is at optimal levels.Physical Demands: The position requires Lifeguard Certification, which includes significant physical demands as outlined below.American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Requirements: Attend all training sessions. Successfully complete a pre-course screening session which includes the following: Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick; 100 yards breaststroke;100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing, or breaststroke or a combination of both;Swim 20 yards (front crawl or breaststroke), surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and return with it to the surface, and swim back 20 yards. This is a timed event;Perform all required skills with 100% accuracy, pass a written test with a score of at least 80%.Pay range for position $20.00 to $22.00 per hour based on experience.
