Director of Finance
Reports To: Executive Director
Entities: John Eliot Corporation | Benevolent Fraternity of Unitarian Churches
Schedule: 30 hours/week — flexible, with availability during month-end close and audit periods
Bookkeeper Support: Transactional/clerical tasks handled by existing staff
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
UU Urban Ministry (UUUM) is a nonprofit social justice organization based in Roxbury, Boston, with a nearly 200-year history of working for change. We serve high school youth of color, survivors of domestic violence, and in partnership with the Roxbury community. THE ROLE
This is a hands-on leadership role with both strategic and execution responsibilities. With a bookkeeper handling day-to-day transactions, the Finance Director focuses on financial management, reporting, compliance, and organizational oversight across two entities. The role is ideal for an experienced nonprofit finance professional seeking a meaningful engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare monthly consolidated financial packages for leadership and program directors
- Manage bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and intercompany accounts across two corporations
- Reconcile all endowment and investment accounts monthly; interface with investment managers
- Reconcile donation income with development director monthly; track all restricted funds
- Oversee month-end close including journal entries, depreciation, and prepaid schedules
Budgeting
- Lead annual budget development for two corporations and all programs
- Prepare payroll budget, grant budgets, and multi-year fixed asset budget
- Provide budget-vs-actual analysis and ad-hoc financial reporting to leadership
Audit & Compliance
- Manage full audit process for two corporations and UFR audit; liaise with auditors year-round
- Prepare all work papers, schedules, and documentation; provide input for two 990 returns
- Handle all state filings: Annual Report, Form PC, property tax, workers' comp audit
Grants Administration
- Oversee yearly budgeting and monthly invoicing for federal grants; reconcile against program reports
- Track all federal grant funds; prepare budget amendments as needed
Payroll, HR & Benefits
- Oversee biweekly payroll; Benefits reconciliation
- Administer employee benefits including health, dental, FSA, and PFML; manage open enrollment
- Stay current on Massachusetts payroll and benefits regulations
Leadership & Communication
- Attend weekly leadership and quarterly board/committee meetings
- Serve as primary finance contact for Executive Director, auditors, bankers, and funders
- Maintain and update internal controls, financials policies, and finance procedures
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of nonprofit financial management experience
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online; multi-entity nonprofit experience strongly preferred
- Familiarity with federal/state grant compliance (VOCA, ARPA, DPH a plus)
- Experience with audit preparation and UFR/990 reporting
- Strong communicator; comfortable working with program staff, board members, and external partners
· Salary for this 30-hour per week role is $85,000. Some in-person work is needed.
