Job Description

The Campus Safety Security Member is a key liaison between the college community and public. This role supports and backups Campus Safety Officers and Dispatchers while maintaining a visible and professional presence across the campus. This non-sworn role is integral to fostering a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for the entire community. Security Members respond to calls for service, conduct patrols, and assist with campus events and emergencies in a supportive and community-centered manner while supporting the department’s mission and community-policing philosophy.

Security Members are considered essential personnel, expected to report to work during weather-related closures, campus emergencies, and special events. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.

Essential Functions:

In order of importance, capture the major job tasks/duties that any person in this role must be able to do. These should be actual duties that can be measured, not qualifications.


Patrol & Community Safety 55%

  • Conduct regular patrols by foot, vehicle, or bike of the campus property, including academic buildings, residence halls, and grounds.
  • Monitor for and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, maintenance concerns, or unauthorized access.
  • Check and secure buildings after hours; open and unlock buildings or rooms as assigned.
  • Report lighting and other facility issues to Facilities Management using appropriate work order systems.
  • Provide walking safety escorts and lockout assistance to members of the campus community.
  • Assist with traffic control, parking enforcement, and visitor guidance as needed.
  • Attend department meetings and training sessions as assigned.


Community Engagement 25%

  • Actively engage with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to build positive relationships and foster trust.
  • Participate in campus and departmental community engagement programs and safety initiatives.
  • College events and emergency support to help maintain safety and provide visible security presence as assigned.
  • Support emergency response efforts by guiding responding agencies, assisting first responders, while following department protocols.
  • Assist in non-emergency & emergency medical transports when authorized to do so.
  • Respond to fire, intrusion, trouble, door, panic alarms and notify appropriate personnel when necessary


Communication & Documentation 20%

  • Answer and respond to routine radio and phone communications during shift.
  • Complete accurate, timely, and professional written reports of incidents, observations, and service calls.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow college and department policies regarding records and information sharing.
  • This position is part of a team that operates 24/7/365. Shift assignments may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Uniforms are provided. All offers are contingent on successful completion of a background check, including CJIS clearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 1 to 5 years of previous experience in security, law enforcement, emergency response, or a related field.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Smith College’s driving credential requirements.

Knowledge of:
Relevant experience in law enforcement, public safety, security, or emergency dispatching.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to quickly learn and use new software (IMC, EMS, ARMS, CJIS, OneCard, etc.).


Skills
Ability to function calmly and efficiently in all types of situations including emergencies or high-pressure situations.
Commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to de-escalate tense situations.
Ability to walk and stand for long periods, work in inclement weather, and occasionally lift over 25 pounds.
Proficiency with Google and ability to quickly learn and use new software.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in criminal justice, emergency management, psychology, or a related field.
  • Certifications in CPR, CJIS, or APCO.
  • Prior experience working in a college or university setting.

Compensation

In addition to a competitive benefits package, pay for this role is typically between $21.23 - $25.94 hourly covering the middle half of market compensation. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications.
