We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Payroll and Team Management team, which builds the core infrastructure and applications that power Toast's Team Management software for Toast restaurants. You'll play a key roll* in the design, development, and delivery of scalable software solutions that enable restaurant owners to pay wages and provide employment benefits to their staff.



A day in the life (Responsibilities)

  • Join a collaborative team of Design, Product, and other engineering members in developing robust and scalable full-stack software applications
  • Own software development end-to-end from ideation to implementation, release, and measuring customer impact
  • Provide design feedback and participate in code reviews to ensure implementation meet requirements
  • Participate in architectural discussions and influence the technical roadmap
  • Advocate for best coding practices to raise the bar for you, your team, and the company
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other team members
  • Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.


What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • 8+ years of back-end experience in Java, Kotlin, or other object-oriented languages
  • Proficient building production-grade software with the latest AI development tools
  • Proficient with modern web standards and technologies (e.g. React, TypeScript, REST, GraphQL)
  • Proficient with SQL and noSQL database technologies
  • Experience with distributed systems, enterprise messaging systems, and/or microservices
  • Experience delivering high-quality, reliable services to production
  • Excellent cross-team communication skills on complex technical topics
  • Passionate about technology and learning new things

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions, if eligible), benefits, and equity (if eligible).


Pay Range


$138,000-$221,000 USD
