Medical Assistant - AFSCME
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides medical/nursing support functions to provider staff in ambulatory setting. This includes performance of specimen procurement (phlebotomy) and related specialized procedures according to BMC policy and procedures base on standards set by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Performs duties to assist the clinical staff in safe, efficient delivery of patient care.
Patient Care Duties
Obtains and documents required patient information, including but not limited to: age, weight, address, next of kin, etc.
Timely notifies clinical staff of any changes or unusual findings relative to patient information and/or unit functioning.
Assists clinical staff during procedures and exams, including but not limited to: performing room set-ups, assisting patients with preparation steps (e.g., dressing/undressing), handing instruments/supplies, acting as a chaperone, and holding or restraining patients.
Instructs patients/families as directed by clinical staff, including explaining procedures and reinforcing discharge or procedural instructions.
Obtains EKG when ordered.
Performs phlebotomy/obtains specimens as ordered, prepares samples for testing, completes order forms/labels, and arranges for or delivers specimens to appropriate labs or drop-off points.
Reviews charts for accuracy and completeness, including obtaining and filing lab/test results, interviewing patients, completing pre-procedure checklists, and retrieving old records.
Schedules appointments and/or procedures/surgeries to ensure efficient patient care.
Transports/escorts patients and families as needed.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; notifies clinical staff when patients in other age groups are present.
Obtains and documents pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height.
Clerical and Support Duties
Answers telephones and patient/visitor inquiries, identifying unit, self, and role; responds to needs within scope of role or takes and delivers messages promptly; seeks assistance from clinical staff when appropriate.
Prepares records for clinic sessions, including re-filing at close of session.
Obtains and enters charge information.
Orders, stocks, and organizes area equipment, supplies, and materials in accordance with budget or par levels.
Performs general office duties such as taking inventory, picking up and delivering correspondence, photocopying, etc.
Checks and cleans area equipment, performing safety and quality testing as needed.
Performs exam/procedure room turnover between patient visits/procedures, including cleaning and restocking.
Identifies emergency or urgent situations and initiates appropriate response actions within scope of role, including immediately notifying clinical staff of medical emergencies and initiating “CODE” procedures.
Protects confidentiality of patient, employee, and hospital information at all times.

Works cooperatively and constructively with all staff members and takes appropriate steps to resolve interpersonal conflicts, seeking supervisor assistance when needed.
Seeks and acts upon constructive feedback regarding performance and works toward achieving goals identified in evaluations.
Participates in staff meetings and quality improvement or educational activities; reviews meeting minutes if unable to attend.
Complies with established standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and regulations (e.g., DPH, Joint Commission, fire codes, OSHA).
Consistently adheres to attendance, safety, and infectious disease control policies and remains available on the unit.
Remains knowledgeable of and follows policies regarding work hours, absenteeism, and tardiness.
Participates in ongoing educational activities to maintain technical competency and required skills; maintains all required competencies.
Attends in-services on new equipment, procedures, and programs; maintains accurate annual education records.
Completes annual mandatory education (safety regulations, infection control standards, departmental and unit-specific competencies).
Maintains a professional appearance per dress code, including wearing a visible hospital I.D. badge identifying self as a Medical Assistant.
Assists in orientation of new staff and serves as a resource to float staff.
Adapts to changing patient and unit needs, offering assistance to team members, floating, or adjusting assignments as needed.
Collaborates with charge nurse, nurse manager, or supervisor to coordinate break periods with unit activities.
Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that demonstrates respect for patient diversity.
Organizes care efficiently, effectively uses hospital resources (equipment, supplies, personnel), and completes assignments within an appropriate time frame.
Other Duties
Utilizes the hospital’s attributes of RESPECT as the basis for decision-making and to support the hospital mission.
Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program.
CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
2 years of service work experience in a health care setting strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Ability to pass clinical competency testing.
Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language; Additional language skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the Medical Center are a plus.
Ability to perform basic math and quantitative measurements, e.g., obtain height and weight, abdominal girths, measure urine output, calorie counts, etc.
Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information/data.
Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads (e.g., independently transport average-sized patient via wheelchair and stretcher, etc.) throughout assigned shift.
Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues, and changing organizational climate and personnel issues.
