To learn more about DCR, our facilities, and our programs please visit or contact us at [email protected] Job Opening: The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for Lakes & Ponds Aquatic Invasive Species Intern (Unpaid Internship). Dates 6-1-26 to 8-31-26. This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Candidates may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university. DCR's Lakes & Ponds Program conducts aquatic plant surveys throughout Massachusetts each year. The Program seeks a qualified candidate to conduct surveys independently via kayak or canoe and documenting the species present. Additionally, the position would also include interviewing boaters using various state boat ramps to educate them on the spread and prevention of aquatic invasive species. Training on interacting with boaters and aquatic plant identification can be provided. DUTIES: The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring they are confident in their aquatic plant identification of common northeast species, as they will be traveling to various waterbodies to conduct aquatic plant surveys. Survey locations will vary based on the candidates home location. While surveying, they will be responsible for correctly entering the plant data into an ArcGIS based program to document what is observed. When present at a boat ramp to interview boaters, the candidate must present themselves professionally and respectfully while conversing with the public to educate them on aquatic invasive species spread and prevention methods. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The selected candidate will be comfortable working independently, be a self-starter, and good communicator willing to approach members of the public to start a conversation. Aquatic plant identification skills are preferred, but not required. Possession of a valid MA drivers license is required. The candidate must be comfortable being in a kayak or canoe and around the water alone. Familiarity with ArcGIS programs is a plus.
