Summary

The Gift Shop Manager is responsible for supporting the Director of Visitor Services in the overall operation and performance of the store, and visitor center. Which includes but is not limited to customer relations, sales, visual merchandising, operations, staff selection and supervision, training and development, and loss prevention. The Gift Shop Manager also adheres to all company guidelines and procedures to ensure efficient daily operations. The Gift Ship Manager’s primary job function is to contribute to the success of the store, visitor center and events, driving sales and profitability while directing all aspects of the visitor experience. The Gift Shop Manager position reports directly to the Director of Visitor Services and performs all duties listed and any additional duties as assigned by the Director of Visitor Services.

Responsibilities (Retail Function)

  • Sell store merchandise, event tickets, and memberships through the museum store POS system. Perform daily opening, closing, and reporting procedures including zip code capture.
  • Reconcile weekly sales, receive and price store inventory, prepare orders for store merchandise, and assist with displays.
  • Create store displays.
  • Make target membership sales goals as set by the Marketing Manager.
  • Process online, telephone, and mail orders for store merchandise.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with books and other store inventory to answer inquiries and encourage sales.
  • Be available to work evening or additional weekend hours at special events.
  • Assist with the training of store personnel.
  • Assist with the coordination of the store’s annual inventory.

Responsibilities (Visitor Center Function)

  • Greet visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Knowledgeable of museums and collections – able to answer guest questions.
  • Gather information on current events and disseminate it to staff and guests.
  • Direct visitors to other services as necessary, including where to dine, walk dogs, park cars, etc.
  • Keep the front desk, visitor center, and restrooms presentable to the public. This includes light housekeeping—dusting and vacuuming, straightening and organizing gift shop, checking restroom for problems, leaks, stocking paper, towels, toilet paper, etc.
  • Maintain front desk and visitor center area, including stocking brochures, rack cards, maps, and various copied directions and frequently asked questions. Ensure up-to-date brochures are available and out-of-date material is recycled.
  • Answer phone for general inquiries and transfer calls to staff when appropriate.
  • Other administrative side jobs as assigned.
  • Ensure the exterior grounds are free of trash and debris before we open.
  • Empty trash and recycling.
  • Work at internal and external events if assigned. Duties may include registration, sign-in, refreshments, set up of chairs, tables, decorations, clean up, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Retail management experience and high level of customer service: friendly, proactive, prompt, and professional.
  • Experience with Retail Merchandising.
  • Basic computer skills: Microsoft Office, basic database entry.
